Hollywood fashion and costume designer chronicles his career beginning in Europe after serving in the First World War working for Paul Poiret and Molyneux. With his return to the United States in 1921, he became a costume designer for Famous Players Lasky, which became Paramount Studios, and became most notable for his glamorous wardrobes. When his contract ran out at Paramount in 1927, he opened Greer, Inc., his own couture house. His specialty was creating evening wear and cocktail dresses "that he specifically designed to look good seated at a table." Greer never gave up his work with the motion picture studios, designing film wardrobes for those studios with no in-house designer. His celebrity clientele ranged from Theda Bara to Shirley Temple, with his career ranging from the 1920s and into the early 1960s. [Vintage Fashion Guild site] 7 leaves of b&w halftone photo plates and frontispiece. (8-1/2"x5-3/4").

Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. DESIGNING MALE, By Howard Greer, Hardback, Illustrated, 1952 First Edition, 236 Pages. Howard Greer was a Hollywood fashion designer and a costume designer in the golden age of American cinema. Born In 1896, Died In 1974. Greer began his fashion career at Lucile in 1916, working in New York and Chicago before serving in France in World War 1. After the war he remained in Europe working for Lucile, Paul Poiret and Molyneux and designing for theatre. He returned to America in 1921, and through his theatre work was hired as cheif designer for Famous Players-Lasky studios which was later to emerge from several reorganizations and merger as Paramount Pictures. His best known film work includes the Katherine Hepburn films Christopher Strong (1933) and Bringing Up Baby (1938), and the gown's for 1940's My Favourite Wife. Mr. Greer, one of the most famous Hollywood designers, who retired in 1962, had often displayed his latest styles at fashion shows here. As a designer, he made famous the frankly sexy dress. His career took him from a Nebraska farm to a start as a sketcher for Madame Lucile, the reigning queen of fashion in America before World War I. He also sketched for Lady Lucy Duff Gordon, the post Victorian British style expert. He served in the Army in France in World War. I and stayed on in Paris to work with couturiers Paul Poiret and Molyneux. Returning to America, he became a full‐time costume designer with Famous Players‐Lasky in 1923. He was the first big‐name designer to start a custom salon in Hollywood in 1927. He was also one of the first West Coast designers to establish his own wholesale business. Mr. Greer designed wedding gowns for Shirley Temple and Gloria Vanderbilt and apparel, worn op and off the screen for Mary Pickford, Irene Dunne, Joan Crawford, Ginger Rogers, Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth, Katherine Hepburn, The.da Bara and Pola Negri, among others. In his autobiography Designing Male, published in 1951 he wrote, Madame may be a dreamboat to her friends, but she can be a fishwife to her dressmaker. Many of the headaches he endured, he said, were tolerable only because his work enabled him to be in the presence of such celebrities as Isadora Duncan, Queen Marie of Rumania and Greta Garbo.
