This interesting book on the film shooting in motion was written by Yevgeny Golovnya in 1940 and was approved as a textbook for the All-Union State Cinema Institute. The edition, which examines the influence of filming techniques on the artistic, visual, and technical quality of the movie, consists of three sections and elaborates upon such topics as shooting from motion as a pictorial method, development of motion filming, visual interpretation of music, etc. In the book, the author distinguishes four primary types of film shooting - simple panoramas, dynamic plane panoramas, dynamic spatial panoramas, and pseudo-dynamic panoramas - and provides a detailed description of each filming technique. Importantly, Golovnya reviews the peculiarities of shooting from motion in special conditions, in air and underwater, and offers interesting recommendations on achieving desired results, such as the use of airplanes and special equipment. The narrative is enriched with numerous examples from the author's personal experience as a film director and is based on the analysis of various techniques used in both Soviet and foreign movie industry. The book contains rare schemes and black and white illustrations showing the equipment that was used by Mosfilm in the 1930s, movie stills from various films, including Kosmicheskiy reys [i.e. Cosmic Voyage] (1936; Directed by Vasili Zhuravlov), different shooting techniques, etc. Overall, an interesting material on the history of film shooting in motion.
