Dark Brown Cloth. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Hinge cracked along front edge of spine but still attached. Half inch of material at head and tail of spine is lacking but color has been filled in to match the book's binding. Tiny hole and a reader's crease are present on spine. First free end page is loose but present. Previous owner's name has been written on first free end page. Large chip at one corner of first free end page. Many pages are darkened and/or foxed. Last two, free end pages are heavily creased. Otherwise in good + condition.

Williams, leaf 129 / 130 has a machine-made hole in the bottom margin, not affecting the text, significant foxing. Embossed "House Document" on top cover. Slight wear to binding, tight. Illustrated with 16 chromolithographs by Ackerman New York, drawn by various artists. These two naval lieutenants split their exploring parties into two groups to survey a greater amount of the Amazon River Valley. This, Part 1, covers Lt. Herndon's travels. Later, as captain of the S. S. Central America, also known as the "Ship of Gold", in 1857, he perished when that ship foundered in a hurricane, with the loss of 425 lives.
