Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. [OPTICS, MIRRORS AND VISION] FIRST EDITION thus. 4to. ff. (viii) 48. Roman letter, little Italic. Woodcut printer s device to t-p, 64 geometrical diagrams, decorated initials. Few ll. browned (poorly dried paper), faint water stain to last three gatherings in places, very minor marginal foxing. A good copy in contemporary vellum, modern bookplate to front pastedown, 12 May 1823 and casemark inked to fep, autograph Marcius(?) Meraius [Müller] to t-p, small not modern stamp to lower outer blank corner of last. In modern folding box. A good copy of the first edition of the first Italian translation of this fundamental optics manual a rare book (Riccardi I/1, 570), rarer according to Guglielmo Libri than the original work ( Catalogo , 1861, n.5656). Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-c.1621) was a renowned mathematician and cosmographer, with interests in astrology; he was also a frequent translator of medical and scientific works, including I tre libri . This was a major optics manual written by the English Franciscan John Peckham (c.1230-92), student at Paris under St Bonaventure, and later professor at Oxford and archbishop of Canterbury. Inspired by the theories of Francis Bacon, whom he met either in Paris or Oxford, his Perspectiva communis (1279) was said to be so named as it was widely used. In the following centuries it was the most popular book on this subject as well as the text-book until as late as about 1600 , when Kepler published the first modern study of optics (ten Doesschate, Oxford , 334). Gallucci s vernacular translation made this fundamental yet concise work available to a broader audience. Perspectiva was an explanation of the Arab mathematician Alhazen s theories in 100 propositions, most followed by Gallucci s brief commentary and illustrated with diagrams. Alhazen explored refraction, double vision and the physical circumstances that give rise to visual perception; he was the first recorded scientist to mention refraction by curved surfaces (ten Doesschate, Oxford , 323). Gallucci s glosses feature examples taken from everyday life. For instance, Propositio IX illustrates why a fire appears bigger at night, and bigger from afar, when one cannot distinguish the individual flames. Gallucci compares this to what happens in church to a short-sighted person who looks at the many lit candles: without his spectacles on, the candles will appear like they are big, and touching one another; with his spectacles on, the individual flames will be discernible and the candles smaller. The long section on mirrors discusses the reflection of colours, the angles of incidence, transparency, the function of lead on glass mirrors, mirrors made of iron or diamond, spherical or plain or shaped like a column, and the appearance of images on broken mirrors. An outstanding, clear scientific milestone and the basis of key modern optics theories including Kepler s. BM STC It., p. 496; Riccardi I/1, 570. Not in Brunet. G. ten Doesschate, Oxford and the Revival of Optics in the Thirteenth Century , Vision Res. 1 (1962), 313-42.

[16], 478, [2] pp.First edition of Giovanni Paolo Gallucci s Theatrum mundi, considered the first modern celestial atlas. This 16th-century atlas was the first to use the Copernican coordinates for the locations of the stars. In six books, Gallucci provided his readers with a survey of terrestrial and celestial physics, beautifully illustrated with many woodcuts.Gallucci dedicated it to Pope Sixtus V, who had banned all astrological literature in 1586, trying to convince him to grant an astronomical observatory. Although Gallucci can t resist reading some astrological implications into the constellations, he tried to write a pure astronomical treatise. He discusses planets and their qualities, their radiation, the influence they exerted when in particular positions in the zodiac, and designates some zodiac signs masculine or feminine, commanding or obedient. He also added medical notes to his astronomical treatise, concerning the influence of constellations and the signs of the zodiac on the human body and therefore on human health. Gallucci argued for using astrology in medicine, while warning physicians to be thoughtful and not overly reliant on it.It nevertheless became very popular, probably in part because of the many illustrations. This makes it not only as the first modern celestial atlas, but also one of the most important and popular astronomical works in the 16th century. With an owner's inscription on the title-page. Binding a little stained, lacking the moving volvelles. Slightly water stained in the head margin of the first few pages, with a tear in the foot margin of pp. 93-94, a few stains (sometimes affecting the plates), but otherwise in good condition and with the additional folding table "Canon sexagenarius".l Adams G168; BM STC Italian, p. 289; Honeyman 1423 & 1424; Houzeau & Lancaster 2725; Mortimer, Italian 206; Riccardi I, col. 568; Thorndike VI, pp. 158-159; USTC 831617.

There are 48 woodcut maps of the Ptolemaic constellations, each of which is preceded by a catalogue of the included stars identifying position within the constellation, latitude and longitude (in degrees and minutes), magnitude, and nature? The longitudes on Gallucci's catalog and on his map are those published by Copernicus in ?De Revolutionibus' (1543). (Warner). The positions of the stars are taken from the Copernicus' catalog. "Gallucci's work is remarkable because it is the first atlas using a system of coordinates from which the latitude and longitude of the stars could be read from the margins. The very popular 'Theatrum Mundi' was printed again several times after the edition of 1588". (Star maps. Nick Kanas). This book is considered as the first modern celestial atlas because in the maps, Gallucci uses a system of coordinates and a trapezoidal projection system in order to determine the actual positions of the stars.« Gallucci's works are known for their visual impact »."There are 48 woodcut maps of the Ptolemaic constellations, each of which is preceded by a catalogue of the included stars identifying position within the constellation, latitude and longitude (in degrees and minutes), magnitude, and nature? The longitudes on Gallucci's catalog and on his map are those published by Copernicus in ?De Revolutionibus' (1543). (Warner). The constellation figures are extremely lively and original here."The ?Theatrum mundi' was extremely popular, and was pub.

4to (22 × 16.5 cm). With engraved title-page, folding woodcut plate, 3 woodcut volvelles with moving parts, and numerous woodcut illustrations in text. Including a world map in two hemispheres (incl. America and a scattering of islands at the location of Australia) on two facing pages, they reappear with volvelle attachments on both sides of leaf 149 and leaf 153. Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment. First edition of a well-illustrated encyclopaedia of astronomical and surveying instruments available since classical history, by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-ca. 1621), a well-known private teacher to the Venetian nobility and founding member of the Second Venetian Academy. It gives a comprehensive summary of the knowledge of astronomy, cosmography and mathematics at the time of Galileo. "It describes instruments designed by others (Finé, Apian, Gemma Frisius, etc.) and gives credit to the original inventors. The one exception to this is the Visorio, which Gallucci claims as his own, but an identical instrument by Waldseemüller can be found illustrated in the 1512 edition of Margarita Philosophica by Gregor Reisch. Other instruments, such as the Hemispherical Uranico (a complicated device used for computations dealing with the moon, sun and stars), appear to be of Gallucci's invention. Besides the usual portable instruments, he also includes a simple quadrant and a two-ringed armillary built into the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence" (Erwin Tomash). For some of the instruments this is the only description available. The present second issue of the first edition appeared a year after the first. With the owner's label of the Capuchin friar and astronomer Agostino da Piacenza (1747-1839) and the relating library stamp "Bibliotheca Capucinorum Placentiae" on the engraved title-page. A few marginal water stains and some occasional spots, otherwise in very good condition. - Adams G 167. Burden 96. Cantamessa 1688. Crone 98. Erwin Tomash 23. Shirley 199. for Gallucci: G.
