Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm, xix, 468 pp, plates, ills. From the blurb - "In Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Professor Fleming presented a full-length study of one of Britain's most controversial group of artists, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, from its formation in 1848 until its dissolution in 1854. The author now concentrates on the careers, following the end of the Brotherhood, of the three principal Pre-Raphaelites, who were strikingly dissimilar as artists and men: the rigidly uncompromising Holman Hunt; the enormously popular John Everett Millais; and the fascinatingly independent Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Primarily the story of 'three lives', the book also traces the course of Pre-Raphaelitism during the middle and late Victorian years when it was not sustained as a formal organization, and it presents a vivid picture of an important and colourful era in British art. Among the secondary figures the most important and ubiquitous is John Ruskin, who exerted a pervasive influence on Pre-Raphaelitism, and on each of three principal lives. In addition to contemporary published sources, Professor Fleming has consulted many collections of manuscripts, including Rossetti's letters to Jane Morris, in the British Museum; Hunt's journal and private diary, in the John Rylands Library; the Millais Papers, in the Pierpont Morgan Library; and the voluminous correspondence to the P.R.B. critic, F. G. Stephens, in the Bodleian Library. The material used by Professor Fleming, much of which appears now in print for the first time, enables him to make a number of revelations about the principals in this study and to shed fresh light on familiar episodes. The volume will thus be an invaluable quarry for specialists. Because of the author's highly readable style and straightforward approach to his subject, it will also attract and hold the interest of those for whom it was primarily written, intelligent general readers with an interest in the Victorian period." A little rubbed, slightly agetoned, otherwise Good in used and slightly torn dustwrapper.

Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xv, 233 pp, ills. From the blurb - "In September 1848 seven art students, the oldest of whom was 23, resolved to challenge the ultra-conservative art establishment of England. They formed a secret organisation which they called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In less than two years the secret was out and these young artists had become notorious, controversial and more hysterically denounced than any other group of artists in the history of England. The dispute centred upon them involved practically every artist and art critic in the nation, and drew in such prominent non-artists as Charles Dickens and the Prince Consort. Their movement was saved only by a magisterial and level-headed defence by Ruskin. In this first full-length study of the Pre- Raphaelite Brotherhood Professor Fleming combines impressive scholarship with readability. Relying heavily upon contemporary sources, the author paints a vivid and dramatic picture of the principal figures in the movement - John Everett Millais, Holman Hunt and, dominating the scene, one of the most fascinating personalities of the nineteenth century - Dante Gabriel Rossetti." Browning to prelims, otherwise Good in chipped and slightly yellowed dustwrapper.
