Countway Library of Medicine, during which time he established and organized a Washington, D.C. headquarters for the American Library Association's international office. He was scheduled to return to Harvard September 1. Esterquest was the first librarian of Countway, the largest university-owned medical library in the country. Book.

Upper corners bumped (visible on text block), spine just slightly faded, text clean, binding sound. FitzGerald (1871-1931) was a wealthy American-born mountaineer best known for organizing the expedition described here. Having previously climbed in the Alps and New Zealand, he set his sights on South America in 1896. "He took a geologist, surveyor, engineer, and naturalist to make scientific surveys, and six alpine guides led by Mattias Zurbriggen. FitzGerald made several unsuccessful attempts before Zurbriggen went on alone to make the first ascent of Aconcagua (22,835 feet), the highest peak in the Americas" (DNB). Neate F37.

Spotting to frontispiece and title page, scattered spotting to text. Both maps clean and beautiful with only a small crease tear to the large map of Aconcagua. Edward Arthur FitzGerald was an American born Britisher who personally financed and led the 1896-1897 expedition that was the first to summit Aconcagua and Tupungato. Aconcagua, at 22,837 feet, is the highest mountain in all of the Americas. Tupungato is fairly massive as well with a maximum elevation of 21,560 feet. Aconcagua lies entirely within Argentina while Tupungato is on the border between Argentina and Chile. The appendices cover 72 pages and deal with the rock specimens collected in the Andes, notes on fossils collected, the natural history of the Aconcagua Valleys including sections on mammals, birds, reptiles, scorpions and spiders, and plants, and the border dispute between Argentina and Chile. Book now protected in an archival plastic cover. Ships same or next business day well protected in a box.
