folio. [ff. 8]. 10 engraved plates, 8 by Jacob.Merz, 2 by Richter after Fischer. 19th century half calf (quite rubbed, some foxing & light marginal soiling, short tears in title & margins of a few plates with no loss). Fischer, a sculptor, was professor of anatomy at the Academy of Graphic and Plastic Arts of Vienna. In the 1780's he undertook to construct an anatomic-myologic statue for the use of graphic and plastic artists and also completed a reduced-scale reproduction of the skeleton which had been used in making the statue. Later he completed a life-size myologic statue which was placed in the Academy of Graphic and Plastic Arts of Vienna, and a smaller soft-metal statuette. Several unauthorized editions appeared before Fischer published his own revised version in 1790. The first two plates, by Richter after Fischer himself, show outline representations of the skeleton and its proportions, the next four, by Jacob Merz, are finished figures of the skeleton, and the last four, also by Merz, are linear representations of four different views of Fischer's statuette. Wellcome III p. 29. See Choulant pp. 321-23.
