Contemporary speckled calf, gilt-stamped lettering and ornament in spine compartments (5 raised bands); 4to; pp. [12], 227, [1], plus 85 engraved plates depicting masks and other artifacts from classical antiquity. Joints cracked and boards coming loose; spine tips and corners lightly chipped. Very faint foxing to title-p., otherwise text block is fine. The first treatise on tragic and comic masks used in the ancient theatre, well-illustrated from statues, bas-reliefs, figurines, and more. Ficoroni (sometimes Ficcoroni, 1664-1747), was an Italian antiquary and author of several books on Roman ruins, amulets. He is probably best-known for his discovery of the exquisitely carved "cista" near Praeneste, which he presented to the Museum in the Collegio Romano. Brunet II, p. 274; Cicognara, n. 1652.
