Libro
Soft cover. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Ship plans, Drawings, Diagrams, Maps, Small Nautical Cameos Ilustrador. 1st. The wreck of the steam corvette HMS Orpheus on the Manukau Bar in February 1863, with the loss of 189 of her complement of 259, remains NZ's worst maritime disaster in terms of lives lost. However, the wreck of the ship, en route Sydney to the Manukau Harbour (then Auckland's west coast port of entry), with supplies for HM ships based at Auckland, has received only modest attention from NZ maritime historians and Fairburn's "The Orpheus Disaster" is a comphensive account, containing the most extensive research, covering the fate of the warship, reasons why the ship was sailing to NZ, details of her construction, dimensions, armament etc along with technical data, rescue efforts, the hearings and controversies that followed. A note on the back cover regarding the author draws attention to the extent of his research, stating they covered every aspect of the topic, extended over 60 years and included examining records and reports "around the world," among them the stories told by survivors. When wrecked the Orpheus was a new ship, completed about three years before her loss. The ship was sent to the RN's Australian Station and her commander, Commodore W F Burnett, was also the Station Commodore. He was among those lost on the Manukau Bar. With so much information in Fairburn's boojk it is difficult to focus on any particular sections, but those relating to events immediately preceeding the wreck, the investigations that followed and the various afforts to allocate responsibility for the disaster are patricularly memorable. The immense effort put into this remarkable book produced results that must have been rewarding for the author, and still are, for the reader of this significant addition to NZ's maritime history. First edition of 1987, 243 pages including six appendices, bibliography and index. Illustrated throughout with b/w photos and art reproductions, technical drawings, maps, plans, diagrams and numerous small items of maritime equipment etc used as chapter tails, maps to both end-papers. The VG+ red card covers carry a colour reproductrion of the wreck scene as painted by Admiral R B Beechey in 1863, the rear panel carries two small images of the ship and a portrait of the author. The text block could also graded as VG+ apart from the fact that five sheets, (pages 83 to 92) have become loose. This is not a result of rough handling, but apparently a production fault where the binding process has caused a perforation line along the spine joint. There is no loss of text material but the loose pages protrude fractionally from the vertical page edges when the book is closed. In all other aspects the text block is in excellent order. The author has signed his name in ink below the author line on the title page. Loosely enclosed in the book is an extended, illustrated, review of the book from the NZ Herald, dated November 13, 1993. This is a scarce book, signed copies especially so. Book weight is 1kg unpacked: could require additional postage for international delivery. By Author.
