US edition (first published by Andrew Melrose, London, 1953). Richard Carew (1555-1620) was a British antiquary and translator. He was High Sheriff of Cornwall in the 1580s, and wrote The Survey of Cornwall (1602), a topographical and cultural survey, and only the second county history published in England. Included here are other works by Carew: Godfrey of Bulloigne, a romantic epic poem translated from Tasso's Italian version; two essays: The Examination of Men's Whits and The Excellencie of the English Tongue; also A Herring's Tail, an amusing 'poeticall fiction'.
