Seconde édition tirée à 1860 exemplaires. La première édition de 1922 ayant été tirée à un très petit nombre d'exemplaires. Il s'agit de la deuxième publication conjointe de Max Ernst et Paul Éluard et de la première véritable collaboration : pour "Répétitions", publié juste avant "Les Malheurs" , Éluard a simplement choisi les collages d'Ernst qui convenaient le mieux à ses poèmes ; mais pour "Les Malheurs", le duo a travaillé en "symbiose presque parfaite" (Assa) pour produire une oeuvre sur des thèmes tels que "le rapport entre peinture et poésie, le rôle de l'image comme icône des processus psychiques, et le statut ambivalent de la fonction scopique - ou la réversibilité de l'aveuglement et de la révélation" . anticipant ainsi de deux ans le Manifeste du surréalisme d'André Breton (1924) cf. Two issued bound together by Bayntun in full tan calf with gilt frames, ornate gilt spine panels with gilt-stamped title on a black morocco label, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Pp. 185, [5] adverts; [183], [6] adverts, 2 double-sided black & white plates in No. 2 and also in No. 3. Bound without the original wrappers and without the half-title to No. 3, pages tanned as usual. Joints rubbed, outer corner of No. 3 title-page missing with loss to the year, professionally repaired. A beautifully bound, handsome copy of two early issues of this important literary review produced in Paris in the twenties. Sylvia Beach in her book "Shakespeare and Company, talks of 'transition': "All the best Anglo-Saxon and European work of the period appeared in it, much of it for the first time. Of all the reviews I came in contact with, 'transition' was the most vital, the longest-lived, and the review that I felt was most intelligently devoted to the interests of new writing."
