Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. Rossetti was a British poet, illustrator, painter and translator, and a member of the Rossetti family. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats. His later poetry was characterized by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling, especially in his sonnet sequence, The House of Life. Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his pictures, spanning from The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Astarte Syriaca (1877), while also creating art to illustrate poems such as Goblin Market by the celebrated poet Christina Rossetti, his sister. Complete set of two volumes. Rare and collectible. Black cloth, gold decoration and gold titles on spine. No stated publishing history so presumed first edition, first printing thus. This is a used book. Pages are clean and bright with no markings, notes, or highlighting. One page in front of book which lists other books for sale by this editor is loose in each volume. Remaining pages are tightly bound. Previous owner's signature and price written on front endpaper; bookplate on inside front board; not ex-library. Binding is tight and square with no fading on boards. Minor staining on bottom of front boards. Corners are bumped. Hinges are firm. Minor edge wear at tops and bottoms of boards. An excellent reading copy. 562 total pages.

First Edition. Large Octavo. Portrait frontispiece, 296 pages, index, (2)pp. publisher ads. A beautiful copy with one of the finest covers designed by Margaret Armstrong. While the Arts and Craft Movement arose from the pre-raphaelites, it never quite equalled Morris's majestic influence. Bound in dark blue cloth, decorated in gilt by Margaret Armstrong, decorative gilt spine, top edge gilt.
