The author, Mrs. Lelah Jackson Edson, as a young girl reached the "Fourth Corner" before the coming of the railroad, when steamer and canoe were the standard methods of transport and roads were almost non-existent. At that time many of the pioneers of the '50s were yet on the stage as well as later arrivals, and numerous ones became acquainteds of the author.
