On an early blank manuscript prize inscription: "Presented by the Lords of the Admiralty, to Charles Fowling, Shipwright Apprentice for his uniformly good conduct and progress in his studies during the Year 1871" and signed by F. L. McClintock Admiral Superintendent. Note: Admiral Sir Francis Leopold McClintock or Francis Leopold M'Clintock KCB, FRS (8 July 1819 ? 17 November 1907) was an Irish explorer in the British Royal Navy who is known for his discoveries in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. In 1872?1877 McClintock was Admiral-Superintendent of Portsmouth Dockyard. In 1879 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief, North America and West Indies Station. McClintock left the Royal Navy in 1884 as a Rear Admiral. Very good condition octavo, original full leather binding, moderate wear, marbled edges, original marbled end papers, splitting but binding holding some foxing especially to outer leaves (and inscription), many illustrations, xii plus 828 pages including index.
