1851 publication with B&W illustrations - plates checked and all present, although one seems to have been misplaced; red cloth binding discoloured, worn and fragile, but neatly mended; title paper onlay to spine is chipped and browned; corners bumped. Page fore-edges discoloured. Internally, book plate on front paste-down; title page says 'Only XXII copies printed for private circulation'; yellowing and scattered foxing to pages; a small amount of neat annotation, especially on P.17/18. Overall, a readable and enjoyable copy of an intriguing old book. Used - Acceptable. Fair hardback.

A very scarce first edition copy of this fascinating report of the proceedings of the British Archaeological Association in August 1848. This work was edited by the notable British antiquary and historian Alfred John Dunkin, who was an original member of the British Archaeological Association, editing and printing an number of reports on the BAA'S general meetings. In a signed 'J. Leighton, Brewer' haff crushed morocco binding. A limited print run, with 'only Cxx., copies printed for private Circulation'. Collated, complete with twelve plates, one of which is coloured and many of which are folding. With an additional folding plate facing page 88. In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally, slightly rubbed to extremities, raised bands, and head and tail of spine. Bookbinder stamp to front pastedown. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to edges but very bright and clean, with the odd spot. Scattered spots to first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed. book.

His plans for a comprehensive Kentish primeval period history were constantly modified resulting in the ad hoc publication of material in quantities of 100-150. Alfred John Dunkin (1812 1879), printer and antiquary. "In 1831 he entered his father's printing and stationery business at Bromley, Kent, and in 1837 moved with him to Dartford, where he continued as a printer and wholesale stationer until his death. He belonged to numerous archaeological societies, and was among the first members of the British Archaeological Association, to which, in its early days, he gave some assistance as a printer." (ODNB). Most of Dunkin's published works were issued in very limited numbers. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Bibliotheque de M. de Barante to front paste-downs, with the library press-mark label.

Written by Alfred John Dunkin, a British antiquary and historian. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the board. Splits to the cloth at the joints, with light loss to the head of the spine. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. The odd small closed tear to the page edges. The odd pencil mark. Library bookplates to the pastedowns, library stamp to the title page, and ink notes to the rear of the title page. Good. book.
