Condición: Very Good Plus. First edition. 4to. 26.5 by 18 cm. 192 hand-colored engraved plates starting with Clovis and continuing on to the Napoleonic era, with the final portrait being of Eugene de Beauharnais. This is then a chronological presentation of the most important French personages -- monarchs, courtiers, warriors, poets, essayists and novelists, artists, saints, scientists, politicians, etc. The portraits accompany biographies of the individuals. Other than Napoleon, these articles run six to sixteen double columned pages, and so the treatments are most certainly not superficial glosses as one might find in a typical glossary of the famous or even a standard encyclopedia. (Napoleon, being the towering figure that he was, is treated to four articles and four portraits, the longest of the articles being 29 pp.) These pieces are written by many different authors, too numerous to list. In any case, it is surely the plates that are of greatest interest, some of awhich, among the more ancient, are artists' imaginings of how the individuals might have looked, since there is generally no accurate visual record of their appearance, if even there are paintings from the individuals' lifetime. The bright and varied coloring of the plates greatly enhances them, and this coloring is often enriched with gum arabic. (Note that this work is not always colored, and it is also uncommon to find the full complement of plates as are here. As with the writers of the biographical articles, the designers (artists) and engravers are too numerous to list. Some light scattered foxing, and more general browning to the pages. Light wear to outer hinges, but overall a clean, sound set. Quarter Morocco. Marbled Boards.
