Volume XXV in the Publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society series. A collection of reprinted letters from the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) dated from 1703-1740. Contents are listed as follows: "Preface," "Introduction," "List of Letters," "Letters from Hudson Bay," "Appendix A: Governors and Chiefs of Bay Posts," "Appendix B: Ships Sailing Between England and Hudson Bay," "Appendix C: Cargoes Sent to Hudson Bay," "Appendix D: Trade of Hudson Bay," "Appendix E: Biographies," and "Index." The Hudson's Bay Company was founded in 1670 as a fur trading company. HBC once controlled a commercial monopoly throughout the entirety of Rupert's Land, a territory expressly formed for HBC's monopoly. Rupert's Land also comprised the Hudson Bay drainage basin. The Canadian government gained control of Rupert's Land in 1870 following negotiations with HBC. HBC is still in business to this day as Canada's largest and oldest corporation. Today, HBC is commonly referred to as "The Bay" and has many brick-and-mortar retail stores as well as an online store. HBC has since changed its product line to reflect current interests, and as of 2023, no longer sells animal fur products.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. lxviii+455+[lxviii members list] with appendices and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and Hudson Bay Coat of Arms to cover in original jacket. Introduction by Richard Glover. Volume XXV. Copy 504 of a limited edition. First edition. The collection is patch at the start. The Company could keep no permanent archives til it had a permanent home in which to keep them. The earliest reports from the Bay were personal letters like the one form 1682 and was written by Governor John Nixon. The first of the regular series to survive in the Company's archives is the Albany letter of 1703. The collection begins to be complete for the main posts in 1723. Their progress and problems were reported by the mother-house which founded them. The annual letter was not the only source of information about its business which the Company received from the Bay. Each post commander was required to keep a fort journal. From these sources and from the country correspondence which was later carried on between posts there emerges a fairly clear picture of Bay-side life and trade. Condition: Near fine in like jacket.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. lxxvii+415+[xv members list] pages with appendix, index and two folding maps in back pocket. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and companies gilt insignia to cover in original jacket. Volume XXIV. First edition limited to members which this is number 1403. This volume takes the Record Society into somewhat neglected territory. John McLean's Notes of a Twenty-five year's Service in the Hudson's Bay Territory is still the foremost sources of the region's history in the first half of the nineteenth century. The following notes abut the physical appearance and history of the records contained in this volume are worth recording. With the exception of brief extracts printed in the appendix to the Labrador Boundary Commission's Report none has been previously published. James Clouston's journal in the Company's archives is in his own hand. Anthony Hendry's own journal is entitled "Journal of voyage to the mouth of South River for the purpose of determining its precise situation etc in the Company's archives. The next four records Nicol Finlayson's journal, Erland Erlandson's first and second journals, and Clouston's Ungava Report. Condition: Corners gently bumped else near fine in like jacket.
