Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Edition. Cloth. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xv, 363p. A very good copy, the covers of which are a bit blotchy and the spine is cocked, in a good d.j. which is complete, but which is worn at the top of the spine, has some wear at the top corners, has been price-clipped and has a stain mark, about the size of a dime, on the front panel. The front panel of the dust jacket is outstanding as it shows a very elegant, tall, slim, and fashionably dressed woman striding, with a cigarette in her left hand and a modern purse in her left. There is more in the picture, a London street with stores, autos, and even a bus. It's all in green (the color of her dress), black, and cream. The d.j. artist has put their initial at the bottom of the front panel and it seems to read ML and I wish I knew who did this memorable d.j. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Blue Cloth Hardback. Condición: Fair. Third Edition. 1923. Third (cheap) edition. 307pp and a fronitspiece illustration. Published anonymously, this is a classic work that was written by Sir William Young Darling (1885-1962), an Edinburgh business man, banker and politician and great uncle of former Chancellor Alistair Darling. It is a fictional account of bookselling that at the time of its first publication was widely believed to be true, and purports to be drawn from the papers of a bankrupt bookseller who committed suicide. The book sheds a wonderful insight into the world of bookselling in the 1920s/30s and will be greatly enjoyed by all book collectors. Chapter headings include: shop windows, bookshelves, the bookseller and the books, a bookseller's customers, the bookseller's cat, books on travel and guide-books, bad trade, books no decent bookseller would keep, necromancy, improving books, madness and books, and bills - the bookseller's nightmare. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with yellow titling on the spine. The case of the book is in fair to good condition with shelf wear on the boards and a large and noticeable parch of fading from damp or water damage on the front board. The cloth on the front board is partially lifted and there is a 1/2" x 3.8" hole in the cloth near the fore edge of the front board. The spine ends are bumped and the spine is faded and there is lighter fading along the top and spine edges of both boards. The contents are tight and clean with some damp marking and soiling to the front endpapers and lifting to the front fixed endpaper. A name and date (1933) has been written on the front free endpaper.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). This copy signed by the author on the title page and dated 1942. 8vo. xv, 363pp. Reddy-brown cloth with a paper spine label (and a spare tipped-in at the rear). The cloth lightly faded at the backstrip, and with a small enclosed split to the head of the upper joint, which just impacts the spine label. Top edge lightly dust soiled, and the free endpapers very lightly toned and spotted. A very good copy in lightly dust soiled price-clipped dust wrapper, with several centimetres of corresponding loss to the head of the front panel-spine panel join, and a little accompanying creasing. The author's second book, the humorous fictional diary of a west end draper, presumably inspired by his own experiences managing the family draper business. The format of the present work is not dissimilar to the author's first book, 'The Private Papers of a Bankrupt Bookseller' (1931). The rear panel of this present dust wrapper includes some reviews of his previous effort, my personal favourite being "Badly presented, poorly edited . the outpourings of a genius". Sir William Young Darling (1885-1962) was the Unionist Member of Parliament in the House of Commons for the Edinburgh South constituency from 1945 to 1957, and also director of the Royal Bank of Scotland over roughly the same period. Signed by Author(s).
