Soft. Condición: Good+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. Presumed 1st Edition. A lovely Aquatint plate (print) with original hand-colouring from Daniells' "Voyage Round Great Britain". The Image, within a very light wash-coloured border, measures 165mm x 240 mm, (6.5 " x 9. 5") . There are quite a few tears to the plain broad margin that surrounds the image and a longer older repaired tear to the bottom right corner of the plate. This has been 'repaired' to the rear of the print with masking tape and the tear runs into the very bottom corner of the image just marginally affecting the grey/blue of the sea and the border. Easily fixed and in a mount or a frame this would be unnoticable. The Publishers details beneath the image are partially obscured/rubbed but most of that line including the date is visible. Apart from these minor flaws the image itself is Fine. Daniell's 'Voyage Round Great Britain', is described by Tooley as ''A magnificent series of plates. The most important colour plate (work) on British Topography'' . In early 1813, Daniell conceived of the ambitious plan to travel around the entire coastline of Britain while producing an illustrated work of the voyage. The journey began at Lands End in the summer of 1813, and from Clovelly in North Devon continued across the Bristol Channel to Wales. This is the ILFRACOMBE plate. Images available on Request. ; Oblong 4to.

Hand-coloured aquatint, drawn and engraved Daniell. Very good condition apart some overall light soiling. A fine plate from Daniell's 'A Voyage Round Great Britain', described by Tooley as ''A magnificent series of plates. The most important colour plate [work] on British Topography'' (Tooley). The journey began at Lands End in the summer of 1813, and from Clovelly in North Devon continued across the Bristol Channel to Wales. From St. Donat's, Daniell traveled to Swansea, where he commented on the excellence of the pottery and to Tenby, where he enjoyed the local theatre and observed the benefits of bathing. He then visited Fishguard, which he appreciated for its 'comfort and cleanliness' and Cardigan, where he admired the gaol designed by Nash. After traveling through the mountains of Merionethshire to Barmouth, he finally reached Holyhead and Anglesey by mid-October. Abbey Scenery 16; Tooley (1954) 179.

Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Daniell. A fine very rare architectural view of the residence of the Louis Philippe, Duc d'Orleans. The scene that Daniell presents is full of life and interest: the foreground teems with figures going about the every day life of the palace, whilst to the left hand side building work progresses with workmen on scaffolding concentrating on hoisting a large block of stone shown half way up the façade. Although this print is not recorded by Sutton in his magisterial work on the Daniells, he does list a picture exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in the summer exhibition of 1828, titled "Scene in the grounds of H.R.H. the Duke of Orleans at Neuilly." This may be of the same scene in which case it appears that Daniell issued the present print in an attempt to take advantage of the interest that the picture in the exhibition was generating. William Daniell (1769-1837), nephew of Thomas Daniell, R.A. is best known for his views of eastern scenery. In 1784 he accompanied his uncle to India, and there helped him with drawings and sketches. On their return in 1794 he worked upon their important publication, 'Oriental Scenery.' Between 1795 and 1838 he exhibited as many as 168 pictures at the Royal Academy and 64 at the British Institute. His earlier exhibits were Indian views, but from 1802 to 1807 he sent many views of the north of England and of Scotland. He published 'A Picturesque Voyage to India,' 'Zoography,' in conjunction with William Wood, F.S.A., 'Animated Nature,' 1807, 'Views of London,' 1812, and 'Views of Bhootan,' 1813, from drawings by Samuel Davis, of the East India Company's service, who visited Bhootan in 1783. In 1814 Daniell began 'A Voyage round Great Britain'; this was published in four volumes in 1825. He painted, together with Mr. E. T. Parris, a 'Panorama of Madras,' and afterwards, unaided, another of 'The City of Lucknow and the mode of Taming Wild Elephants.' He became a student of the Royal Academy in 1799, in 1807 was elected associate, and in 1822 a full member of that body.' (DNB). Not in Sutton.

"4to (14 x 11 1/4 in.; 35.6 x 28.6 cm). 48 etched plates by William Daniell after Samuel Daniell, 48 text leaves, tissue guards; light, chiefly marginal foxing to most plates. Later half green morocco over green marbled boards, marbled endpapers, spine lettered gilt, top edge gilt; joints lightly rubbed, spine faded to brown. FIRST EDITION, "A MOT BEAUTIFUL AND SENSITIVE WORK" (Abbey). Mendelssohn and Abbey distinguish between two editions, one quarto as in the present instance, and the other oblong folio, the latter considered by Mendelssohn to be the second issue. Known as the "artist-adventurer," Samuel Daniell arrived at the Cape on 9 December 1799, joining an expedition which travelled the perilous 700 miles to Lataku, the seat of King Mooliahaben of the Booshuanas-then the extreme limit of European exploration. His drawings of the landscape, the wild animals, and the inhabitants of the interior became the source for both his African Scenery and Animals (1804-1805) and the present work, published posthumously. His brother William used soft-ground etching for the latter in the belief that it would best "transfuse the spirit of the originals." Daniell's sketches are now highly regarded as an early and sympathetic record of African life. Half-title, Frontispiece, Title, Dedication to the directors of the United East India Company, Preface, Contents, Directions to the binder, Introductory chapter, Part I: Tracts I-XXX, Part II: Narrative of the Mutiny, Appendix with "An alphabetical list of plants, seen by Dr. Roxburgh growing on the island of St. Helena, in 1813-14," pp.295-326. Publisher's grey paper-covered boards, printed spine label, uncut, neatly re-backed preserving original spine and label A work expounding St. Helena's virtues published the year after Napoleon arrived, written by its former governor. With six beautiful aquatint plates, plus an engraved plan of the island. Beatson was a senior army officer in the East India Company's service who carried out important research and published widely on the subject of botany. Beatson saw service in India in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War of the late-1790s and published an account of his experiences on his return to England in 1800. He then took up the position of Governor of the remote South Atlantic island colony of St. Helena between 1808 and 1813, directly before Napoleon's exile. As he describes in the book, during his tenure as governor of St. Helena, Beatson had to put down a mutiny in 1811 when a number of soldiers protested against measures he had introduced to restrict the availability of alcoholic spirits. As an isolated and desolate stop-off between Britain and her Asian colonies, St. Helena had acquired a reputation as an ill-disciplined and inhospitable outpost. It had long been generally supposed that St. Helena was a rocky and unproductive island and mostly devoid of soil. He wrote this book in an effort to alter contemporary views of the island's fertility and potential. After spending several years on St. Helena, Beatson became convinced that its lack of production was due to flaws in technique rather than its natural endowment. In making his case, Beatson describes the history of St. Helena's geological formation, its soil and climate conditions, minerals, and potential for vegetable production, as well as the qualities of the island that lend it to military purposes. During Beatson's appointment as governor of St. Helena he introduced a better system of cultivation and made many improvements to the island of St. Helena. Abbey, Travel 312. Gay 3088. Kress 21458. Aquatint by and after Thomas & William Daniell, coloured by hand, on 'Whatman' wove paper. Image size: 16 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches; 21 1/8 x 29 1/8 inches. A very fine view of the Barramah'l region that had just recently been wrested from Tippoo Sultan's grasp when the Daniells visited. "Rayakottai formed part of a chain of military outposts used by Tipu Sultan's forces on their campaigns in the Tamil country. A British flag flying proudly from a lookout halfway up the hill proclaims the recent British victory. Rings of walls encircling the central granite rock at successive levels were clearly visible to the Daniells, but can hardly be traced now" (Martinelli/Michell p.144). The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered to be the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. Consisting of one hundred and forty-four views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of twenty-four plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801; twelve plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; twenty-four plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; twenty-four plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and twelve further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the twenty-four plates of Hindoo Excavations, which are after drawings by James Wales. Hand-coloured aquatint, drawn and engraved Daniell. (Light surface wear just below title where plate number removed). A wonderful and very rare image 'splendidly drawn, quiet and restrained in.colouring, [which] stand[s] at the high-water mark of aquatint in England' (Hardie & Clayton) This view is taken looking over the terrace at the Adelphi on the north bank of the river, across the river to the south west to Westminster Bridge, the Abbey and the old Houses of Parliament. 'After the publication of the Oriental Scenery William Daniell had clearly made up his mind that he would not be associated solely with India, and that his prowess as a draughtsman and as engraver in aquatint could well be employed for plates dealing with home scenery. in 1804-5, he made a start with a magnificent set of six views of London which show him at his very best as artist and engraver. These large views splendidly drawn, quiet and restrained in their colouring, stand at the high-water mark of aquatint in England' (Hardie & Clayton) Cf. M.Hardie & M.Clayton 'Thomas Daniell. William Daniell' in Walker's Quarterly Nos.35-36, 1932, p.30; cf. T.Sutton The Daniells (1954) p.113.

Aquatint, tinted by hand, drawn and engraved Daniell. A fascinating and very rare image 'splendidly drawn, quiet and restrained in. colouring, [which] stand[s] at the high-water mark of aquatint in England' (Hardie & Clayton) This view is taken, from a high vantage point, from beside the Tower of London, looking westwards across the Pool of London with its mass of shipping of all sizes, to the bridges and Westminster beyond. The silhouette of the dome of St.Paul's Cathedral is visible on the horizon just to the left of the Tower. Oblong folio (10 1/8 x 14 2/8 inches). 42 fine hand-colored aquatints drawn and engraved by Daniell (occasional slight marginal soiling). Contemporary French red straight-grain morocco backed, red paper boards, gilt (a bit rubbed). Provenance: from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 83 The plates showing views of Scotland from 'THE MOST IMPORTANT COLOUR PLATE BOOK ON BRITISH TOPOGRAPHY' (Tooley). The original parts were issued from the 1st of January 1814 but the work was not completed until 1825; these plates are watermarked 1817 and 1830. The plates include images of the Isle of Arran, a number of Mull, the Isle of Jura, many of Argyleshire, the Isle of Eig, the Isle of Rum, Loch-alsh, several of the Isle of Skye, some in and around the Island of Staffa including Fingals Cave, Iona, Ben-more, Ayrshire, the Crag of Ailsa, views on the Clyde, the Isle of Bute, and one of Refrewshire. Extra-illustrated with a hand-coloured lithograph entitled "Scotch" published by Ackermann. The nephew of the celebrated landscape artist Thomas Daniell, William Daniell was "an extremely accomplished aquatinter and etcher and at times experimented with the latest printmaking techniques as adopted by J. M. W. Turner, for instance wiping out highlights in his watercolours. In 'Oriental Scenery' he used sepia and bluish grey for printing and stained the prints so as to replicate the effects of the original watercolours; colourists were only employed to add small touches to figures or foreground foliage. He was a prolific printmaker, producing a series of high-quality productions that included 'A Brief History of Ancient and Modern India' (1802-5); 'Interesting Selections from Animated Nature' (1807-12); 'A Familiar Treatise on Perspective' (1810); 'View of London' (1812); 'Illustrations of the Island of Staffa' (1818); 'Sketches of South Africa' (1820); 'Views of Windsor, Eton and Virginia Water' (1827-30), and the 'Oriental Annual' (1835). His most famous independent work was his 'Voyage round Great Britain' (4 vols., 1814-25), which made extensive use of sepia wash" (Natasha Easton for DNB). Abbey Scenery 16; Tooley 177. Without the index chart which was published separately to accompany the work, but, as Tooley notes, the chart 'is not normally included, the work being complete without it'. (Ayton's name does not appear on the t.-p. of v. 3-8, as he wrote the letterpress for v. 1-2 only.--Cf. Dict. nat. biog). The original intention was to make a coastal trip by sea, but it became clear early on in the venture that this was not practical, and most of the journey around the coast had to be made by road. The journey was completed in six separate trips, over the period 1813 to 1823. The final twist in the story of A Voyage Round Great Britain, was the discovery, in 1962, of 306 of the original 308 Daniell copper plates, the location of which had not been known for more than 100 years. They are now the property of the Tate.

Oblong folio. (18 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches). 10 hand-colored aquatints by Daniell after Kershaw. Wrapper title in expert facsimile. Expertly bound to style in red straight grain morocco, covers bordered in gilt, spine gilt A very rare complete set of views engraved by Daniell after Kershaw, depicting the aftermath of the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-26). Kershaw was a member of the invading forces who made drawings of the journey between Rangoon and the capital. Announced for sale in the Asiatic Journal, they are there described as "extremely beautiful, and do very great credit to the pencil of Capt. Kershaw, and the engraver of the eminent artist conjoined with him. The gorgeous temples and peculiar edifices at Rangoon, Prome, Pagahm Mew &c. are represently with great fidelity; and the landscapes are exquisite. We have rarely seen a more successful exhibition of Eastern scenery, with all its soft tints, delicate light and luxuriant foliage . These plates afford the best idea of Burman scenery we have yet met with and we shall be surprised if they do not attact much notice." The plates comprise: 1. Rangoon from the Anchorage. 2. View from Brigadier McCregh's Pagoda, Rangoon. 3. Dagon Pagoda, near Rangoon, taken from the Lines of H.M. 13th & 38th Regiments. 4. Dagon Pagoda, near Rangoon. 5. Prome, from the South heights. 6. North face of the Great Pagoda, Prome. 7. View from the West face of the Great Pagoda, Prome. 8. Prome, from the heights occupied by H.M. 13th Light Infantry. 9. Melloon from the British Position. 10. Pagahm-Mew. We trace just one complete copy in the auction records of the last 50 years (the Travis-Bobins-Lohia copy). Abbey does not call for a title-page, but notes that a title appeared on the printed publisher's wrappers. A text volume, titled Description of a Series of Views in the Burman Empire, also appeared separately and is not present here. Abbey Travel 406; Bobins 797; cf.
