Libro
Hardcover. Condición: NF. Estado de la sobrecubierta: VG. Photos, Art, Maps Ilustrador. Reprint. The second volume of Cowan's two book classic account the NZ Wars has the subtitle "A History of Maori Campaigns and the Pioneering Period." and also notes that it spans the era of the Hau Hau Wars 1864-72. (Volume I covers the conflict from 1845-64). The two volume set was first published in 1922 and for many years was regarded as the most detailed and reliable account of the many engagements of the Wars. They were reprinted in 1955 without amendment and again, with amendments, in 1983. A note to that edition states that the text was "photographically reproduced from the 1955 reprint without textual amendment adding that: " Some original photographs could not be located, duplicates used. Former index deleted --- new updated index inserted." While there has been some debate about the author's objectivity, as revision of some aspects of the Wars has taken place, much of the Cowan material is based on contemporary records, letters and diaries, the recollections of participants and his own coversations with them --- from both sides of the conflict. As such his account still remains an important research tool for those studying or interested in those troubled times. (Historian Michael King provided a new introduction for the 1983 reprint, but it appears only in the first volume of that edition.) Volume II only of the 1983 reprint, 632 pages including index for both volumes, 14 appendices. Illustrated throughout with b/w photos, art, drawings, maps/plans. Red hard covers with gilt front/spine titles are NF, colour e/dapers decorated with Maori designs, text block also NF, no inscriptions. DJ with colour tone illustration front and back is unclipped and VG with light soiling to flap folds and faint partial cup ring to front, small chips/tears at spine top, few tiny spots top page edges as closed. Book weight 900 grams unpacked.

Hardcover. Condición: VG. Estado de la sobrecubierta: G. Photos, Art, Map Ilustrador. 1st. The author selected 37 historic incidents from early New Zealand , examples of gallant deeds in peace and war, compassion, self-sacrifice, civilary and endurance with Maori and European equally; reprsented in the acts, individual or collective. In his preface Cowan laments the lack of accurate historical knowledge of the country and seeks to counter opinions such as "Our country lacks much romantic material usually found in a new land." The wide range of the actions he describes clearly demolish those sentiments covering, as they do, epics from gallant last stands to rescues, good works in the face of extreme danger, romantic moments, compassion for the wounded in battle, exploration, peacemakers and warriors to shipwrecked castaways. Cowan (1870-1943) was a leading NZ historian whose many books often became classics. First edition of 1935 from Harry Tombs, 288 pages including notes and index, 12 b/w plates, art and photos, one map. Blue hard covers with black spine titles have fade areas at spine extremities, also faded areas to front and rear boards, (probably from damp rather than sun). internally excellent with no indication of damp effects, no inscriptions. Original dust wrapper is G with 2.5cm section missing spaine base, also at spine top extending, but decreasing, to rear panel, few short tears, chips to edges wirh tape repairs on spine reverse. A scarce book.
