Second edition. Post 8vo (200 mm); xx, 604 pp. 30 photographic plates and a map. Original red cloth, spine slightly faded. Frederick Albert Cook was an American explorer who claimed to have breached the North Pole on April 21, 1908. This was a year before fellow American Robert Peary claimed the same thing, and both accounts were disputed for several years. His expedition did discover Meighen Island, the only discovery of an island in the American Arctic by a United States expedition. After reviewing Cook's limited records, a commission ruled in December 1909 that he had not in fact reached the pole. This account, first published 1911, has Cook repeating his assertion that he had done so. Book.

Pictorial Board Covers. Condición: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Written by the explorer Dr. Frederick A. Cook "My Attainment of the Pole. Being the Record of the Expedition that First Reached the Boreal Center, 1907-1909. With the Final Summary of the Polar Controversy" . Cook's original purpose in exploring the region west of Greenland was ostensibly to organize a hunting expedition. Just north of Etah, Cook decided that conditions were good enough for an assault on the North Pole, and set out on his journey over the sea ice with two Eskimo companions, two sledges and 26 dogs. Cook is one of the most controversial figures in the history of polar exploration. The author describes his journey across Ellesmere Island to Axel Heiberg and northwards, as he claims, to the Pole; also included are chapters on the Inuit and their native customs, the ice and snow conditions, and a new design for a sleigh, as well as a lengthy discussion regarding the controversy over his Polar claims of discovery. Published in 1911 The Polar Publishing Company with 32 plates from photographs with dozens of illustrations . 604 pages. Some shelf wear and spine ends and corners are bumped. Cloth. Condición: Good. 1st Edition; xx, 604pp, illustrated, frontispiece, plus 49 b/w photographic illustrations. Original brown pictorial cloth lettered in gilt. His supporters claim that he was the hero of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, the first to climb Mt. McKinley, and the first to stand at the North Pole (allegedly only four days before Robert Peary). Others insist that Cook faked his claims to both Mt. McKinley and the North Pole, and continued a career of deceit by using the mail to defraud investors in a Texas oil promotion, for which he was convicted and spent five years in federal prison. The endless controversy and debate continues over what Cook's true accomplishments were. [Ricks: p.70; Smith: 1976; Wickersham: 4904 (later printing)]. Shelfware, top and bottom of spine, corners bumped and begining to fray, covers grubby, stained. Previous owners signature on fep, some foxing, spotting to some pages of preface, creasing to pages and odd pencil annotation. Good. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 5 kilogram.
