Libro
Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Endpapers, matte-paper frontispiece, and marvelous color dust jacket art by J. Clemens Gretter (Gretta) Ilustrador. Front flap lists 25 HBs through "The Secret Panel" (1946.) Rear flap lists Fran Striker's "The Lone Ranger and the Outlaw Stronghold" (1939), only. Jacket rear panel lists seven Lucky Terrell Flying Stories through "The Flying Jet" (1945.) With a recommended price of 6565, this is the 1946B-17 printing of this Hardy Boys adventure, per Carpentieri & Mular Fifth Edition 2004. Wartime paper has not darkened too badly, but HAS become somewhat fragile to page edges, and a previous owner has closed some edge tears to pp. 177-182 -- including a larger corner separation to pp. 181-182 -- with clear "Magic" tape. While none of this tape covers any text, these reasonably careful repairs nonetheless reduce our book grade here from "very good" to "good." One of Gretta's most marvelous (some have called his color palette "hallucinogenic") jacket illustrations (with minor chipping to head and heel of spine, only), and a somewhat less common title from the series. 215 followed by single page ad listing 24 HBs through "Short-Wave Mystery" (1945.) Reduced from $30.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Illustrated by the brilliant J. Clemens Gretta (Gretter, 1904-1988) Ilustrador. This is printing 1941A-8 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934.") This sole 1941 printing (the eighth overall) retains the glossy frontispiece and the blessedly near-white (NOT browned high-sulfur wartime) paper stock. Twenty HBs through "Flying Express" listed both to jacket front flap and to final page. Priced "5050" (NOT the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J.") Rear flap lists 19 X-Bar-X Boys through "Haunted Gully"; jacket rear panel offers 20 "Spotlight Books for Boys" including five Lone Rangers. Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed "Gretta" (in offset printing, not "autograph.") Remains of a Christmas gift sticker of the era to top corner of illustrated red-orange FFE. Book will close its own text block; spine rolled about 1/4-inch, but still "very good in very good." 219 pp. Reduced from $70.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Illustrated by the brilliant J. Clemens Gretta Ilustrador. This is printing 1945A-15 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934." though heaven alone knows what you'll get.) Kicker to top of title page has changed here from "The Hardy Boys" to "Hardy Boys Mystery Stories" (that happened in 1944), while the glossy frontispiece (which would disappear in 1947) remains. Twenty-three HBs through "The Melted Coins" listed to jacket front flap; four Don Winslows to rear flap. (No internal lists.) Wartime (acidic) pages considerably age-toned, but still flexible and easily read. Front flap also displays the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J.", as called for. Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed (as printed, not autograph) "Gretta." Book will close its own text block; "very good in very good" -- with an otherwise near-fine jacket downgraded a bit due to all-too-common partial sun-fading of the spine. 219 pp. Reduced from $100.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. J. Clemens Gretta (Gretter, 1904-1988) Ilustrador. This appears to be printing 1943A-11 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934.") Twenty-one HBs (through "Broken Blade", January, 1942) to front flap, which is price-coded to reflect the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J." Copyright page lists 13 HBs through this title; jacket rear flap lists 20 Ted Scotts through "Pursuit Patrol" (1943); jacket rear panel offers 14 X-Bar-X Boys through "With the Secret Rangers" (1936.) Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed (though of course not HAND-signed) "Gretta." Pages show considerable age-browning, mostly to edges, but are still flexible & easily read. Book will close its own boards as well as its text block, but there are a few rough spots to rear board. Jacket somewhat sun-faded to spine, and is missing a half-inch chip to top of spine. 219 pp. Here reduced from $165.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Illustrated by the brilliant J. Clemens Gretta (Gretter, 1904-1988) Ilustrador. This appears to be printing 1944B-13 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934.") Kicker to top of title page has changed here from "The Hardy Boys" to "Hardy Boys Mystery Stories" (that happened in 1944), while the glossy frontispiece (which would disappear in 1947) remains. Twenty HBs through "Flying Express" listed to final page. Wartime (acidic) pages darkened to edges, but still flexible and easily read. However, this 1944 copy came to us in what appears to be a 1941 jacket, displaying 20 HBs (through "Flying Express", January, 1942) to front flap, and priced "5050" (NOT the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J.") Rear flap lists 19 X-Bar-X Boys through "Haunted Gully"; jacket rear panel offers 20 "Spotlight Books for Boys" including five Lone Rangers. Grosset & Dunlap were known to use leftover jackets as much as three years at variance, but the presence here of some minor scratches to front board -- not evident to jacket -- probably indicates this was an after-market marriage. Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed (via offset printing, not "autograph") "Gretta." Book will close its own text block; spine rolled about 3/8ths-inch, but still "very good in very good." Orange coloring to jacket spine remains bright here -- not sun-faded to yellow as is common. 219 pp. Reduced from $140.
