Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. xiv+136pp. Illus. in text. Charles Churchill took passage from New York to Chagres in the summer of 1849. His letters are supplemented with replies from his brother in Ohio. Besides experiences en route, they describe the discouragement of digging for gold and the drudgery of clerking in a mining camp store. Other letters report experiences in 1851 with an American party which marched off to Sonora as miners, only to be seen as incipient if not actual filibusters. This venture was also a failure. The editors add details and explanations and connective passages to relate these episodes to the social history of the gold rush. Further Reading and Index.
