Full Leather. Condición: Good. Fourth edition. Fourth edition, [1754]. Small 12mo, pp (4), xlvi, 232, a little age-toning and a few blemishes, the endpapers and the first and last few pages have some browning around the margins, overall however the contents are sound and tight, contenporary full calf a little worn, rubbed at the corners, the spine dull, some cracking at the joints but all firm. [Child {c. 1630/31 - 1699) was an English merchant and politician. He was an economist proponent of mercantilism and governor of the East India Company. He purchased Wanstead Manor in Essex in 1673 from the executors of Sir Robert Brooke and spent much money on laying out the grounds of the manor house, Wanstead Hall. John Evelyn described him as "sordidly avaricious" !! Child's advocacy, both by speech and by pen, of the East India Company's claims to political power, as well as to its right of restricting competition to its trade, brought him to the notice of the shareholders. He was appointed a Director in 1677, rising to Deputy-Governor and finally became Governor of the East India Company in 1681. In this latter capacity he directed the Company's policy as if it were his own private business. He was a moderate in those days of the mercantile system, and has sometimes been regarded as a sort of pioneer in the development of the free-trade doctrines of the 18th century. Though Child considered himself a proponent of the competitive market, he simultaneously argued for a government-controlled interest rate and restricted trade among the colonies which would benefit England.].

First published in 1690 as A Discourse about Trade by Sir Josiah Child (c. 1631 - 1699), economic writer and merchant. "In 1690 he published under his own name the comprehensive Discourse about Trade, which included his Proposals for the Relief and Employment of the Poor, which had appeared earlier as an undated pamphlet. This work was reprinted in 1693 under the title A New Discourse on Trade to coincide with a new attempt in parliament to reduce the legal maximum rate of interest. Child acquired considerable fame as an economic writer in his own day and was both widely read and frequently quoted. His works were reprinted continuously during the eighteenth century and published in French in 1754. He exerted influence because of his fluent and persuasive pen, his debating skills, and his obvious success in and experience of business" (ODNB). As Geoffrey Poitras notes "Child is another of the truly remarkable individuals populating the early history of financial economics. Child has some status as a noteworthy, pre-Smithian economist. His status as Governor of the East India Company was matched by his stock trading acumen" (The Early History of Financial Economics, 1478-1776, 2000, p. 322). Goldsmiths' 7762; Kress 4492. Octavo (162 x 95 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep, double gilt rule on sides and spine, dark red morocco label, red speckled edges. Duplicate gathering of signature G (pp 99-122) bound in; with the terminal advertisement leaf not cited by Kress. Large library stamp of "Bond" on front free endpaper. Binding somewhat worn, joints cracked but cords holding, with some loss of leather. An attractive sound copy, clean and with good margins, in a period binding.

It includes Sir Thomas Culpeper's A Small Treatise against Usury (pp. 217-36). "In 1690 [Child (c.1631-1699), economic writer and merchant] published under his own name the comprehensive Discourse about Trade, which included his Proposals for the Relief and Employment of the Poor, which had appeared earlier as an undated pamphlet.
