Original o primera edición
Three-Quarter Leather. Condición: VG+. First Edition. Custom-bound in period burgundy 3/4 morocco, marbled paper covered boards, gilt accents, 4 raised bands, lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, with the original front wrap bound in and serving as title page. Modest shelf wear, leather slightly cracked along front joint which is otherwise firm and intact, mild rubbing evident along edges and to corners, slight surface loss midway along fore-edges. xiii,563 pp. Deckled text block edges, top edge in gilt. A dictionary of the hundreds of characters in Balzac's novels. With an impeccable and most ostentatious provenance, this copy recorded in both period pencil (on blank verso of front flyleaf) and bookseller's catalog entry (tipped in) as Lot 180 in the March 1900 auction of the library of 19th-century theatre manager and impresario Augustin Daly, with additional mounted book plates of Harry Bache Smith (color Harlequin variant, front pastedown) and Owen Biddle (armorial, front flyleaf). A solid copy with minor cosmetic defects, and a most fascinating history. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
