Book is Very Good Plus or better, rebound in very nice green cloth with a nice black mottled pattern, very clean, spine has gilt title with ornamentation, retains original end papers, Binding is Fine. Text would be at least Very Good Plus. No frontis as issued. The book does have the scarce dedication page to Fremont's wife Jessie. The first portion of the narrative is 250 pages and documents authors travels as artist for Fremont's fourth 1853 expedition looking for a railroad route through the Rockies. Carvalho left the Fremont party and took the southernly route to Los Angeles. The second portion of the book, 130 pages, is devoted to Mormonism and their practices. Very detailed information on plural marriage, sermons, and various Mormon leaders. Four pages of advertisements are present. A nicely rebound later printing with valuable information about travels with Fremont and Mormonism.
