Cloth. Condición: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. This work takes a look at the history of Southern California through the eyes of John Calvin Sherer, a telegraph operator, who had come from Pennsylvania, a typical "settler" of the 1880s. It tells how he threw himself into the development of the region of which he was now a part, and how the news of the world passed daily through his hands as a telegrapher which led to his editing of the newspaper in his home city of Glendale, California. Photographs are included. This copy is SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the FFEP, and is clean and solid. Signed by Author(s).

Hard Cover Full Gloss. Condición: Near Fine. No Jacket. ## CAPE VERDE (World Bibliographical Series) Vol.123 1991 ## ## THIS BOOK: This book is classified: as NEAR FINE. This is the 1991 Edition: First published in 1991. Full gloss cover in black and white and laminated. Minor shelf wear, but other than that, a nice clean book inside and out. A wonderful amount of information on Cape Verde, flora and fauna, the people, geology and much more; whether you intend to visit or are just interested to learn, this is the book, which I must say seems to be quite rare in this condition.## ## The Republic of Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten islands, nine of them inhabited, which lie in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 300 miles Off the coast of Senegal. The islands were discovered in 1460 and settled by the Portuguese, with their slaves from West Africa. These West African and European antecedents have produced a unique Cape Verdean culture and language during the Succeeding 500 years of continuous settlement (Crioulo). 'The archipelago's early prosperity as an entrepÖt for the slave trade during the 16th and 17th centuries did not last, for the arid climate combined with a lack of natural resources saw the country suffer drought, famine and mass emigration. Although agriculture is still the main occupation on the islands, food has to be imported, and the economy is sustained by foreign aid and remittances sent from Cape Verdean emigrants abroad. However, development initiatives such as major afforestation projects to combat the serious problem of soil erosion are being undertaken. Social indicators now compare favourably with other Sahelian and Least Developed Countries. ## ## Sadly, the material on these fascinating islands, set at the crossroads of African, American and European history, is not as accessible as it deserves to be. This volume, the first annotated English-language bibliography of Cape Verde, attempts to correct this situation. Making use of the British Library, the Biblioteca Nacional in Lisbon, and the Instituto Caboverdiano do Livro in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde; its detailed annotations cover colonization by the Portuguese, liberation movements, the career and writings of Amflcar Cabral, relations with Guinea-Bissau, Crioulo language and literature, as well as many more general topics. ## ## ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Caroline S. Shaw received an MA from King's College, London, in 1988, specializing in Cape Verdean language and literature. She is a bibliographer and assistant editorial manager for the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences and International Current Awareness Services within the British Library of Political and Economic Science. -She visits Cape Verde regularly and has contributed material on the islands to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and The rough guide to West Africa. ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. PLEASE, contact me for a shipping quotation. ###. No Author signature.
