Laid in is a printed slip from Scribner's Sons entitled "To the Literary Editor" with the expected date of publication (Sep 21 1934) and the price ($3.00). At the time this book was published, Upton Sinclair published a weekly, UPTON SINCLAIR'S EPIC NEWS. Reuben Borough was its editor and Sinclair contributed several (political) articles in each issue. Minor wear to extremities, spine slightly faded and gilt somewhat dulled, cover gilt somewhat flecked but bright, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Victor Francis Calverton was the pseudonym of George Goetz (1900-1940) an American left-radical writer and literary critic. Calverton founded the MODERN QUARTERLY, a politics and arts magazine which ran from 1923 to 1933. From 1933 until his death in 1940 it continued as The MODERN MONTHLY and was notable for publishing opposing views within the same issue and supporting the work of Black intellectuals. Calverton wrote 18 monographs and was editor of An Anthology of American Negro Literature (1929). Upton Sinclair is mentioned twice in the text of this book, which is dedicated to Clarence Darrow, "the grand old veteran in the war against superstition." "What I have tried to do in this book has been to interpret the psychological consequences of religion in terms of the sociological factors which have created them." [from the Preface]. Signed by Author(s).
