Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Historical novel which is "a drama-packed, worldly story of the simple Americans who founded a Western empire". Callahan was a Native American Indian expert, being part (a small part) Native American himself and an avid collector of Indian artifacts. This novel is illustrated with 18 very good full page drawings, but the artist goes uncredited (could it be the author?). The front endpaper carries a bold inscription by the author which, apart from the words "INDIAN WAY" is basically illegible. He has signed it and drawn a small doodle of Indian tepees and mountains. A very good copy indeed, with some scratches to the cloth on the rear board, and slightly browned edges. The dust jacket is very good, rubbed and a little worn on edges and folds. The inside of the jacket has some red offset staining and is printed with some promotional information on the book, reproductions of some of the illustrations (still no artist mentioned), and a list of other titles from the publisher. It seems to be publicity aimed at booksellers, so was this a copy that was signed by Callahan and sent out to dealers? I dunno. Inscribed by Author(s).

Tight solid book, gilt titles on spine. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 339 pages; The author takes the American powers that be to task for allowing native American culture to die out, languages to disappear. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper as follows: "To Doyle Hurst [?] / Best wishes / Robert E. Callahan." Beneath this inscription in the same ink is a drawing of any eye, a diamond with rays and series of arcs piled on top of each other, presumably drawn by the author. Thick 8vo. (22 cm.) [10]11-384p. Illustrated with 13 black and white line drawings. Red cloth with black letters on the spine. Small black and white photo of the author on the rear turn-in of the dust jacket. Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, spine hints at having been damp at one point but with no stain, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Dust jacket faded and tattered but most all there. Robert E. Callahan was in silent pictures, professional publicity, and music, as well as writing historical novels. He originated "Death Valley Dayks," "Lone Indian," and "The Singing Bandit" broadcasts. He designed and created the "Desert Outpost" near Beaumont, California. [from the dust jacket] This book is a novel of the recklessness of the 1880s and 1890s in Chicago, St. Louis, Denver, the desert, and San Francisco. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condición: Fair. 3rd printing. (no dust jacket) [worn but intact copy, slight fading to spine cloth, bumping to all corners, fraying to cloth and some exposure of boards at bottom edge, several small gouges in rear cover, small bookseller's rubber stamp inside, one-time owner's name at top of title page]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page: "To Marie Vasgard / with good luck wishes / Robert E. Callahan / 1947." As nearly as I can make out the plot of this somewhat overwrought novel, it has to do with a man who places hundreds of "lonely hearts" advertisements in newspapers around the country, in order to investigate and expose the matrimonial bureaus (matchmaking rackets sometimes referred to in the book as "love cults") that take advantage of lonely women looking for mates. He has undertaken this project to fulfill the wish of his now-deceased wife, and through it he also apparently hopes to achieve some sort of spiritual enlightenment. The chapter contents are laid out like those of popular fiction of an earlier era, e.g.: "Chapter 22: His Mind Goes Back -- Deep Sympathy -- Joins New Cult -- More Letters -- Another Racket." (The book is set in Los Angeles, and in one chapter our protagonist visits a "movie school" and describes its fraudulent machinations.) Basis for the 1946 movie of the same name, which starred Kay Francis, Paul Cavanagh, Robert Shayne, and Veda Ann Borg.
