Green Cloth Hardback. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. 1904. First edition. xiv, 270pp., 51 black and white illustrations but lacking the map. There is a 2 page catalogue at the end of the book. This is a hard-to-find history and description of Simla (also known as Shimla), the capital and the largest city of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. In 1864, Simla was declared as the summer capital of British India. After independence, the city became the capital of East Punjab and was later made the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. The author, Edward John Buck (1862-1948) was the nephew of Sir Edward Charles Buck (1838-1916), a British civil servant who served in the Indian Civil Service and came to be known as the "Grand Old Man" of Indian agriculture. It includes chapters on the origin and early history of Simla; residences of the Governors General and Viceroys; govenrment of India; Annandale; some old houses and their owners; shops and roads; Simla society; Mashobra and Mahasu; trees of Simla (written by Edward Charles Buck); and the cemeteries. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered bevelled boards with very worn white titling on the spine and front board and black illustrations on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and bumping to the spine ends. Most of the white titling on the front board has disappeared and the titling on the spine is totally worn away leaving only the stamped impression. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to the front endpapers and last few pages and scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book. The fore edge of the text block also shows foxing and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. As mentioned above, the map is missing. There is an inscription dated 1904 on the half-title page. PLEASE NOTE: heavyish book so a little extra may be required for shipping to non-UK customers.
