Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good Minus. 1st Edition. Stated First Printing. Once listed, I believe that this will be the Only first edition for sale on the Internet. I am certain that it is the Only non-library first edition for sale on the Internet. It will also be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. The book was co-written by a relative of John J. McCloy's wife Ellen Zinsser. John J. McCloy was the former Assistant Secretary Of War and US High Commissioner Postwar Germany. I purchased the book directly from his home some years ago. The inscription reads: 'To Ellen + Jack, with love from the author, Christmas 1966.' Paper clipped to the top edge of this page is a photograph of the Walworth family along with a penned greeting. It says 'Merry Christmas to the McCloys from Nancy, Ned, Ted, Joyce, Cornelia and Seth Walworth, 1966.' Edward (Ted) Walworth, the husband of the co-author, was the former Chairman of William Zinsser & Company. 'Stationed at the Pentagon during World War II, Lt. Walworth met his future wife, Nancy Zinsser, in the office of Assistant Secretary of War John McCloy.' The book is priced very competitively in relation to the others for sale which, excluding one library book selling for around $200.00, range from $300.00 to $830.00. Again, none of these books are first editions or signed. The $300.00 book also lacks its dust jacket. The blue covers are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The spine ends have only minor crinkling and specks of rubbing. The cover edges look very good. The corners have only either small spots of rubbing or slight rub-through. The page edges look very clean, three tiny tan spots on the middle page edge and one on the bottom page edge. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The front inside cover is in good shape with just a couple of tan specks. The signed end paper, as you can see, has a few tiny tan spots and a slight tannish area near its middle edge. There is also, right above the inscription, a slight indent from the paper clip. That can also be seen on the blank verso of the front end paper and on the facing blank side of the 'By the same authors' page. It's entirely gone after that. These early pages are, otherwise, in excellent shape and very clean. And that is the case with nearly all of the pages in the book (the last page of the Index has a light bit of soiling). Scrolling through, I'm not finding any other soiling. The white rear inside cover is very clean. There isn't any conspicuous creasing on the pages. The pages at the end of the book in the chapter on Geoffrey Chaucer have a tiny crease just above their bottom corners. There are no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. There are a great many b&w illustrations, including several maps, throughout the book. They are all in excellent condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. The front bottom edge has several tears and a few scuffs. There is slight loss at both spine ends, one with some wear. The jacket has some soiling or toning on its rear sid. It is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I have it in a fitted protective cover. 'Social history of western medieval Europe from the 'Barbarian Invasions' to 'The Last of the Middle Ages,' presented for young adults. The final section of the book (page 221--246) focuses on Chaucer, imaginatively reconstructing his daily life and biography, with recurrent comments on his literary works, especially Canterbury Tales.' There are also biographical sketches of the lives of Gregory the Great, Charlemagne, William The Conqueror, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lion-Heart, Frances of Assisi, and Simon de Montfort. 'An introductory section precedes each biography and many illustrations supplement the clear, vigorous text.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
