Condición: very good. Philadelphia, Evans [1873]. Octavo publisher's decorated brown cloth blocked in gilt and black (spine tips worn); 349,[3]pp and four wood engraved plates. Inner front hinge cracked but firm. First edition, it was reprinted or re-issued in 1876 with the duller title 'The Adventures of a United States Detective'. Quite uncommon, unlikely as it seems for this type of American book of this period. Usually there are plenty of shabby copies of such books around. Unlike many of these true stories Detective Brooks did exist, he was famous for his Whiskey Ring exploits. He became head of the American Secret Service and died in 1895 of heart trouble - apparently exacerbated by having a bullet imbedded in it for 16 years. Whether or not he wrote this, it is pacy and readable and as much of his investigations involved corruption within the service as illicit distilling.

Cloth. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo., 349(2)pp. plus 2pp. ads. Sharp First Edition of these supposedly true crime stories. However, like much of these similar "Memoirs", the stories are completely fictitious. Published in 1876 as "The Adventures of a U.S. Detective". Bound in publisher's original brown cloth. Borders and decorations stamped in black and titles stamped in brown over super-imposed gilt banners on front board and spine. Brown end-papers. Black & white illustrations including tissue-guarded frontispiece. Square, tight and generally quite clean throughout with no foxing though an occasional scattered spot. Page edges mildly toning. . Some wear to edges and tips with a 1/2" tear of the cloth at the rear top hinge. Light soiling to cloth. Not perfect but a solid collectable copy of an uncommon item in any condition. (Hubin, p. 50) (Queen: The Detective Short Story, p.15).
