Hardcover. Limited Edition Reprint of 1977. Fine in 1/4 black cloth and printed paper covered boards with marbled end sheets. A 16mo measuring 6 1/4" tall by 4" deep. Without a dust jacket, presumably as issued. One of only 950 copies and this one is identified as copy number 8. 69 pages followed by a bibliographical note. Originally published in Cleveland in 1860 this is a facsimile reprint of the now extremely scarce frist edition of the title. It has been assumed that Brayton was assisted by John Herbert Aloysius Bone in preparing the manuscript for this title.

Second edition. 16mo., 70 pp. Publisher's cloth-backed coated paper over boards. There is slight chipping to the paper at the corners of the boards with a tiny bump to the lower tip, and a partial damp ring on the upper cover. Very good. Howes B-736 " After being stolen as a lad in northwestern Ohio, successively traded to various western tribes, and finally adopted by the Snakes, he wandered with them as far as California and Oregon. Basically authentic, though confused in its details and geography, it is one of the most remarkable and - in spite of its relatively late publication date - one of the rarest items belonging to captivity literature. Mr. E. J. Wessen concludes, from evidence uncovered, that this narrative was actually written by John H. A. Bone." ; Graff 394; Wagner-Camp 351 noting this second edition; Not in the Ayer Collection. Scarce.

70pp. 12mo. Original printed boards, cloth spine. Head and toe of spine bit worn. Leaves a bit tanned. Very good. According to Ernest J. Wessen, this reprint is rarer than the first edition of 1860 published in Cleveland. Brayton was stolen near his home in Ohio in 1825 and sold to the Pottawatomi, who took him to Michigan, where he lived among the Winnebago, Chippewa, and Sioux. The latter took him west, where he was again sold, this time to the Snake, who adopted him into their tribe. Brayton apparently lived among the Snake on the upper Missouri River, following them to California, where he remained some five years. He describes fighting the Blackfeet in Oregon as well as his extraordinary thirty-four years of wandering all over the West. He finally reconciled himself to civilization, enlisted in the army in 1861, and was killed at Pittsburgh Landing in 1862. "Extraordinary as the incidents appear, there is abundant proof of its entire truth" - Thomson. "It is quite true that it would not have been possible for Brayton to have made some of the movements described among the tribes named. On the other hand the critics have overlooked the fact that Brayton was taken at the age of seven and lived among the Indians for thirty- four years. He could not read or write, and spoke English with some difficulty. There remains not the slightest doubt that Matthew was a Brayton, and his narrative is, in general, correct" - Wessen. This account is sometimes attributed to John H.A. Bone, who may have assisted Brayton in setting forth the narrative. A rare Indian captivity, not in Ayer or Field. HOWES B736. WAGNER-CAMP 351. GRAFF 394. THOMSON 115 (1st ed).
