Arte / Grabado / Póster
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 203 x 127 mms., pp. [11] 12 - 102, including title-page and dedication leaf printed twice, disbound; portion cut from top margin of first title-page to remove name. An Independent minister, David Bradberry (1735 1803) spent most of his career in Ramsgate and Manchester; he wrote very little, of which this poem is the best-known work. It was noticed briefly in volume 6 of The British Critic: A New Review: "The first thing which will strike the reader of this extraordinary performance, will be its whimsical dedication, which, but for its length, we would transcribe. It is formally address to the sovereign of the universe. Nor will anyone be less surprised with the singular structure of the verse." The verse reminds one of Christopher Smart's poems.

8vo, pp. [7], 12-102; light stains on title, else a very clean copy, rebound in modern cloth. From Wigan Public Library, with small library stamp on title verso, but no other marks. First and only edition of this rare poem by David Bradberry (1735-1803), who was minister of the congregational Cannon St chapel in Manchester. Bradberry had succeeded Joseph Priestley's brother Timothy there in 1785, but as the DNB records, he was not very successful because he was unable to persuade the Scottish members of his flock not to govern the church with 'ruling elders' in their own traditional fashion. (They later seceded and erected their own dissenting chapel in Mosley St.) In fact, the year this poem was printed Bradberry resigned his post and left Manchester for good. In view of this, rather appropriately, the poem's subject is the day of judgment, described in a series of nine-line stanzas with rhyme-scheme aabbccdde, the lines becoming shorter throughout the stanza. The poem is dedicated to God himself, but described in lengthy terms as 'Jehovah Emanuel, by indefeasible right, Sovereign of the Universe, prince of the Kings of the Earth, Governot General of the World, Chief Shepherd, or Archbishop of Souls [etc, etc]'. ESTC online locates seven copies in Britain and just two elsewhere - at Yale and Illinois.
