James Boswell's 'The Life of Samuel Johnson' was first published in two volumes in 1791, with 1750 copies being printed. The work was from the beginning a critical and popular success, and represents a landmark in the development of the modern genre of biography. It is notable for its extensive reports of Johnson's conversation. This edition has been edited by Augustine Birrell (1850-1933) was a British Liberal Party politician, who was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1907 to 1916. The books are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with paper title labels on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The spines are noticeable faded with a little water splashing and the spine ends are bumped. There is some fading along the top and spine edges of the boards and bottom 1/2" of the front board of volume 1. Volume 5 has some light staining on the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with some light foxing to the first and last few pages of volume 1 and heavier foxing to the first and last few pages of the other volumes, including some marks on the tirtle pages. The fore and bottom edges of the text blocks of volumes 2 to 6 are also foxed and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore and/or bottom margins. The front fixed endpaper of volume 4 bears the bookplate of Captain Douglas Haig, later Field Marshall Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig. There is no inscription in any of the volumes. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy set and extra postage will apply.
