First appearance in print of the text of this lively address by the long-term British advisor to the sheikhs of Bahrain, given to the Royal Central Asian Society in the year he won its Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal. Weaving together his own experiences with historical research, the author discusses the "three words which might be said to summarize the story of the Persian Gulf. These are pearls, pirates and petroleum" (p. 28). Sir Charles Belgrave (1894-1969) has been described as "a complex character" of whose significance "there can be no doubt" (Rich, p. 95). For many years, he was one of the most influential British figures in the Gulf, helping guide Bahraini affairs for over three decades between the 1920s and 1950s. Following his career as an advisor, he turned to writing, publishing The Pirate Coast in 1966. He is credited with being the first westerner to popularize the term "Arabian Gulf". Paul Rich, Creating the Arabian Gulf, 2009. Large octavo, pp. 28-34 within the journal. Original red card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. Half-tone plate after 2 of the author's photographs showing old houses in Bahrain and the newly built municipal building in Manama. With contemporary pencil and ink annotations to front cover and table of contents. Covers and contents bright. A near-fine copy.

Second edition. Signed and inscribed by Charles Patterson to "Laddie Lucas". Publisher's original blue cloth with titles in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. A fine copy, the binding square and tight, the contents clean and crisp throughout. Complete with the near fine dustwrapper which has a touch of wear to the head of the spine. Not price-clipped (£14.95 to the front flap). Signed and inscribed by Charles Patterson to the front free endpaper "Christmas 1996 / For Laddie, whose stimulating company and outstanding achievements / have given me so much pleasure / for over fifty years. / Charles Patterson / 105 Squadron September 1942 to May 1943". An excellent association copy of this vivid, well-illustrated account of two Mosquito squadrons during the Second World War, first published by Sampon Low in 1943, inscribed by Mosquito Squadron Leader Charles Patterson, DSO, DFC (1919-2008) to the legendary spitfire Percy Belgrave "Laddie" Lucas, CBE, DSO and Bar, DFC (1915-1998). Patterson, who is mentioned and pictured in the present work, joined the RAF on the outbreak of war and flew Mosquitos with 105 Squadron, mostly carrying out daylight raids, but also taking part in the first night raid on Berlin. In January 1943 he was selected as pilot for the Mosquito Film Unit and flew Mosquito DZ414 on over 20,000 operational hours both day and night, most notably filming the D-Day landings from above the beach head. Lucas had joined the RAF in June 1940, travelling to Canada to undertake flying training at the Flying Training School. On completion, he was assigned to 66 Squadron in August 1941, with whom he flew combat missions until the end of 1942. Arriving in Malta in February 1942, he commanded No. 249 Squadron during the Battle of Malta, after which he was awarded the DFC. In 1943, he took command of No. 616 Squadron, later commanding the Spitfire wing at RAF Coltishall, and then, between 1944 and 1945, serving with the RAF Second Tactical Air Force in North-West Europe. Lucas was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in January 1944, and then a bar to his DSO in October 1945 for making numerous attacks on enemy communications, often in dangerous conditions. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

First edition, first impression, association copy, with the ownership signature of the author's fellow Arabist Gerald de Gaury on the front pastedown. Charles Belgrave was advisor to the sheiks of Bahrain between 1926 and 1957 and is credited with being the first westerner to promote the term "Arabian Gulf". The author (1894-1969) has been described as "a complex character who had a profound influence. of his significance there can be no doubt" (Rich, 95). Following his dramatic exit from Bahraini affairs, he turned to writing, putting his expertise to good use in this history of Trucial coast piracy. De Gaury (1897-1984) was a diplomat and explorer who was intimately involved in Middle Eastern affairs in the mid-20th century. He was commissioned into the Hampshire Regiment as second lieutenant in August 1914 and fought at the Somme and at Gallipoli, where he was wounded four times and awarded the Military Cross. While convalescing he taught himself Arabic, leading to employment as a soldier-diplomat across the Middle East, during which he became close friends with the ruling families of Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. In 1935, he accompanied Sir Andrew Ryan to Riyadh to present Ibn Saud with the Grand Cross of the Bath on behalf of King George V. Between 1936 and 1939, he served as political agent in Kuwait and, in the winter of 1939-40, again visited Riyadh as special emissary to Ibn Saud. His liaison work in the Nejd and Asir meant that he was able to spend time hunting in the desert with Ibn Saud, further cultivating a friendship of considerable mutual warmth, and in November 1943 he accompanied Faisal on his visit to the UK. Like Belgrave, in later life he translated his experiences into fruitful scholarship. Paul Rich, Creating the Arabian Gulf, 2009. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. With 16 half-tone plates, folding map of Arabian Gulf. Pencilled annotations on front and rear free endpaper. Cloth and gilt bright, slight lean to spine, offsetting on half-title and p. 200; jacket with some creasing, old adhesive tape repairs on verso, unclipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

8vo. 242 pp. Original orange printed wrappers. A rare proof copy, printed without the illustrations present in the first edition. - Starting in 1926, Sir Charles Belgrave served as an advisor to the rulers of Bahrain for 31 years, firstly to Shaikh Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa (1872-1942), then Shaikh Salman ibn Hamad Al-Khalifa (1895-1961). This work is an account of that time and therefore contains much on the politics and society of Bahrain in what were vital years for its development. - Ink ownership inscription to front cover and stamp of the publisher Wyman & Sons to the half-title. Extremities worn with a few tears, covers a little darkened and dusty, page corners bruised and folded, interior otherwise clean and bright.
