Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was an influential French novelist and playwright. The novel sequenceLa Comédie humaine is generally viewed as his magnum opus, and it is in this collection in its entirety.Thirty-three volumes are introduced by George Saintsbury, two (33 and 34) are introduced by J. Walker McSpadden, and Volume 36 is introduced by Paul Bourget. They are all translated from the original French by either Ellen Marriage, Clara Bell, R. S. Scott, James Waring or J.
