Libro
Maroon Cloth Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Reprint. 1898. Reprint (the first printing was in the same year). xiv, [i], 336pp., a frontispiece showing the death of General Gordon, 21 other black and white illustrations, and 12 maps and battle plans (all listed are present although the plan listed as facing page 261 faces page 257). "All that has been attempted in this book has been to put before the public, in a readable and concise form, the events on the Egyptian Soudan which have led up to, and resulted in, the downfall of the Dervishes. Every one knows that Gordon was killed at Khartoum and that Kitchener has avenged his fate, but comparatively few understand - for instance - why Gordon was ever in the Soudan at all, or why British have reconquered that country," - From the preface. The book is divided into four parts. Part I - The Soudan Prior to its Recapture; Part II - The Dongola Expedition, 1896; Part III - The Operations of 1897; Part IV - The Nile Expedition, 1898. Appendices show the organisation of the forces of the Dongola Expeditionary Force, 1896, and the Nile Expeditionary Forece, 1898; and a Roll of Officers snd Men who Lost Their Lives in the Campaign of the Nile (1896-8). The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and gold illustration of two flags on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear on the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The spine is slightly faded and there is also slight fading along the top 1 1/4" and fore 1/2" of the front board. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the back of the free endpapers, the half-title page, tissue-guard to the frontispiece, title-page and the first large folding map of the Egyptian Soudan facing page 1. There is an interesting inscription dated 1899 on the half-title page to a Robert Scott Findlay that refers to his Godfather Captain Charles Findlay who fell at the Battle of Atbara, 1898, who is referred to on page 220 with a small portrait on the plate facing page 221. There is a handwritten note on the bottom of page 220 concerning Captain Findlay. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavyish book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.
