Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. 3 Volumes. 8vo. pp. vii, 317 [i.e. 417]; 463; 406, [41]index. contemporary calf, gilt backs (joints cracked, some marginal browning & light foxing to outer leaves). armorial bookplate of Phillip Howard of Corby. First Edition. Considered by Dugald Stewart to possess "in spite of its numerous defects both in point of taste and of philosophy, infinite merits", and by David Hume as having parts which are "ingenious and curious", although it was "too abstruse and crabbed ever to take with the Public". Hume underestimated its eventual popularity as it reached an eleventh edition by 1839. "Johnson styled it a pretty essay though much of it is chimerical , and Goldsmith flippantly said that it was easier to write that book than to read it ." (DNB) Kames s discusion of aesthetic principles includes chapters on Perceptions and Ideas, Emotions and Passions, Beauty, Grandeur and Sublimity, Novelty, Congenity and Propriety, Dignity and Grace, Ridicule, Wit, Custom and Habit, Sentiments, Language of Passion, Beauty of Language, Epic and Dramatic Compositions, Gardening and Architecture, &c.
