Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio (12 inches). 12 George III, Chapter 67. General title leaf + pages 1303-1316. Woodcut Royal coat of arms and decorative initial. Text in Black Letter. Neatly extracted from a bound volume and expertly mended. The Marine Society was the worlds first maritime charity, designed to recruit boys and young men into the ranks of the Royal Navy. The idea was spawned in 1756 by Jonas Hanway (1712-1786), a prolific pamphleteer, trader, and philanthropist. With the outbreak of the Seven Years War, Britain urgently needed fighting men for theatre, and the Society saw an opportunity to help orphans, vagabonds, the poor and the unemployed, while at the same time assisting the war effort. Those that volunteered for the program, and were approved by the admissions board, were provided with a set of clothes and bedding, taught the importance of personal hygiene, given a rudimentary education and some naval training, and integrated into the forces. By 1763, the program had become an important source of manpower, and had successfully recruited more than 10,000 boys and men. In 1772, the programs importance earned incorporation by means of this Act, and which provided for an official structure to The Marine Society, complete with a Board of Governors, President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Committee, specific rights and privileges, the ability to purchase and own land, hold quarterly meetings, keep records, and other particulars. Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) became a major supporter and trustee of the charity, such that by the time of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) upwards of fifteen percent of the British manpower was being supplied, trained, and equipped by The Marine Society. In time, more emphasis was placed on education, in concert with training, to help diversify the program and place boys in different branches of service. In 1786, the first pre-sea training ship was commissioned, and the Society became the first organization to supply specialized nautical training for their young recruits. Throughout the nineteenth century, many ships were supplied by the Admiralty for training purposes. Between 1756 and 1940, the Society recruited more than 110,000 boys and men for the Royal Navy, the British East India Company, and Merchant Navy.

pp. [12, including initial blank], ff. 40, printed on versos, 8vo, original red morocco, gilt roll tooled borders on sides, flat spine gilt in compartments, lacking lettering piece, a little worn and a few abrasions, engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Pasley inside the front cover, and the pencil signature of another Pasley on a flyleaf, good. An unrecorded edition of the List of the Flag-Officers, not in ESTC: of the editions recorded in ESTC, from 1758 on, none are common - no doubt they were discarded as new ones appeared. Sir Thomas Pasley's motto is suitably bellicose: 'Pro rege et patria pugnans'. At the end of a long and distinguished career Pasley was promoted admiral of the white on 9 November 1805. In this book he has made several emendations, adding names, noting deaths, and correcting (what must be rather surprising) errors in the printed text. Nelson appears as a Captain, his seniority of 11 June 1779 being 169th.

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. A collection of TEN Naval Discipline Acts (1661-1884) containing the ARTICLES OF WAR and LEGISLATION for COMMAND AND DISCIPLINE OF THE ROYAL NAVY. The Articles of War served as the British statutory provision that governed operations of the Royal Navy. First introduced in 1661 under King Charles II, the Articles of War (as outlined in the Naval Discipline Act, 1661) consisted of thirty-five articles designed to curb the indiscipline of officers and seamen alike, establish a penal code for the Royal Navy, and introduce the Court Martial. The Articles of War dealt with a wide range of offences, such as: swearing and drunkenness, treasonous behaviour, absconding with booty or seized money, refusal to fight or pursue the enemy, non-observance of commands and insubordination, neglect of duty, desertion, mutiny, quarrelling or striking a superior officer, wasting ammunition, sleeping while on watch, murder, robbery, theft, sodomy, and various other misdemeanours at sea. Disciplinary punishment administered to officers and sailors were an integral part of Navy life. Death was a punishment in many cases, and could only be imposed by sentence of a Court Martial. High-ranking officers were sentenced to death by firing squad, but the standard method of execution of sailors was hanging from a yard-arm. The Naval Discipline Act, 1661 was augmented in 1745 and then revised and consolidated under the auspices of Vice Admiral George Anson and passed as the Naval Discipline Act, 1749. The 1749 Act established the power and independence of naval courts-martial, but allowed little room to avoid the prescribed penalties. The harsh nature of the rules inadvertently resulted in one of the most tragic episodes in the history of the Royal Navy, namely the execution of Admiral John Byng. The loss of the Battle of Minorca (fought at the beginning of the Seven Years War within the European theatre) was blamed on Byng: the court-martial sitting in judgment of his actions acquitted him of cowardice, negligence and disaffection, but found him guilty of failing to do his utmost to prevent Minorca from falling to the French, and was sentenced to death by firing squad aboard HMS Monarch on March 14, 1757. Byng's death was considered the worst legalistic crime in the Nations annals and was the last of his rank to be executed in this fashion. The Naval Discipline Acts of 1661 and 1749 applied to Great Britain and its Colonies, including those in America, and the regulatory code of conduct bore a strong paternal resemblance to the American Articles of War, 1799. The Naval Discipline Act, 1749 and Articles of War were amended in 1779 to ease some of the more draconian regulations and punishments, and to allow courts-martial some measure of discretion in their rulings to permit alternative punishments to the death penalty. The rules remained unchanged until Lord Clarence Paget, First Secretary of the Admiralty, proposed a more enlightened approach to Royal Navy management and the Articles of War by means of the Naval Discipline Act, 1860. The 1860 code of conduct was revised somewhat in 1861, 1864, and 1865. A more permanent version of the Articles of War, together with provisions for Punishments, Courts-Martial, Penal Servitude, and related issues, was outlined in the Naval Discipline Act, 1866 (revised only slightly by the Naval Discipline Act, 1884), which remained in place until 1957. This collection consists of nine Naval Discipline Acts, dated: 1661, 1745, 1749, 1779, 1860, 1861, 1864, 1865, 1866, and 1884. The 1661 Act is contained in the whole volume for the year of 13 Charles II (which also contains the Militia Act, 1661 that declared King Charles II the supreme commander of the army and navy and gave him unprecedented authority to maintain a standing army. All other Acts (1745-1884) have been neatly removed from bound volumes and mended. Please consult the image for precise titles and descriptions of each Act in the collection.

Large octavo (230 x 150 mm), in the original Admiralty-style binding of straight-grain red morocco with elaborate gilt border incorporating stars, wreaths and cornerpieces, spine gilt in six compartments; inner dentelles; all edges gilt; original marbled endpapers; engraved title-page with date in manuscript 1st October 1794 (although the list has additions to 1801); 200 pp., each with an identical engraved heading, with manuscript entries inblack and red ink below, set out in tabular form within red-ruled lines; mostly written in one hand, with occasional alterations or additions in a second; remarkably fresh throughout. A record of the ships in Nelson?s Royal Navy from 1794-1801 with a distinguished Royal provenance, being a manuscript copy prepared forErnst Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover (1771-1851), fifth son of George III. The register classifies ships by rating; within each rating, vessels are arranged alphabetically. The entries include dimensions, date built, draught, complementofmen, armaments, shipwright or origin (e.g. "Taken from the French"; "Taken from the Dutch"), and, occasionally, fate (e.g. "Lost 1790"; "Taken 1801"). The might of the Royal Navy in the early stagesofthe long wars with France is demonstrated statistically by the sheer number of vessels that are indicated as having been captured from the French. The presence (or, indeed, absence) of the following vessels in the register is of specific Australian interest: the First Fleet store ship Supply(the third HMS Supply), which was decommissioned in April 1792, is not listed, but its namesake (the fourth HMS Supply)- originally the American mercantile shipNew Brunswick, purchased by theAdmiralty in October 1793, then renamed and sent out to Botany Bay to replace her predecessor - is;the other First Fleet naval vessel, HMS Sirius, was wrecked in March 1790, and so does not appear in the register; HMSGorgon, the 44-gunfifth-rate ship which sailed to New South Wales as part of the Third Fleet, is recorded. The most notable vessel with an Australian connection, however, is HMSInvestigator, listed under the rating 'Sloops rigged as Ships'.She was originally the mercantileFram, launched in 1795, which theRoyal Navypurchased in 1798 and renamed HMSXenophon, before she was converted to asurvey ship in 1801 under the name HMSInvestigator. In 1802, under the command ofMatthew Flinders, she would become the first ship tocircumnavigatethe Australian continent. Interestingly, an annotation in red ink in the entry for Investigatorrecords that she was bought in 1798 as Swan - clearly a clerical error for Fram.
