Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on a particular group of inscriptions found on the island of Priene. These inscriptions are not new discoveries, and most have been available for study for a century or more. However, the author argues that they have never been investigated properly, and that many important insights into their meaning and significance have been overlooked. This book is organized into three parts. The first part provides a general overview of the inscriptions, and the different approaches that scholars have taken to interpreting them. The second part offers a detailed analysis of thirteen of the most important inscriptions. The third part explores the broader historical and literary context to which the inscriptions belong, and considers the insights they can offer into the history of Priene and the development of Greek culture. The author argues that the conventional approach to interpreting the inscriptions, which focuses on reconstructing the texts and identifying the individuals mentioned in them, has led to a narrow and incomplete understanding of their significance. He suggests that the inscriptions should be seen not as isolated documents but as part of a larger cultural and historical context. By examining them in relation to other sources, and by paying attention to their physical form and location, we can gain a much deeper understanding of their meaning and purpose. The author's analysis of the inscriptions sheds new light on a variety of topics, including the political and social history of Priene, the development of Greek religious practices, and the role of women in Greek society. He also shows how the inscriptions can be used to challenge some of the traditional assumptions about Greek culture. For example, he argues that the inscriptions provide evidence for a much more fluid and dynamic understanding of Greek identity than is usually assumed, and that the traditional division between Greeks and barbarians was not as sharp as is often thought. This book is an important contribution to the study of Greek history and culture. It offers a fresh perspective on the inscriptions of Priene, and provides a wealth of new insights into the history of the city and the development of Greek culture.
