The first American cabinet, established by President George Washington in 1789, played a foundational role in shaping the early structure of the United States government. Comprising key figures from the Founding Fathers, the initial cabinet members were Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State, responsible for foreign affairs; Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury, overseeing economic policy; Henry Knox as Secretary of War, managing military and Indian affairs; and Edmund Randolph as Attorney General, providing legal counsel. Together with Vice President John Adams, these individuals formed the core advisory team for President Washington. Although the cabinet was not explicitly outlined in the Constitution, its creation set a precedent for the organization of the executive branch, facilitating coordinated decision-making and governance during the nation's formative years.Published by Johnson Fry & Co.
