William IV, known as the "Sailor King" due to his naval career, ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom and Ireland in 1830 after the death of his elder brother, King George IV. Born William Henry in 1765, he had a noteworthy naval service during the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolutionary Wars. His reign, which lasted until his death in 1837, witnessed significant political changes, notably the passage of the Reform Acts of 1832. These acts aimed at parliamentary reform, expanding voting rights and reshaping the political landscape. William IV's personal life included his marriage to Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, though their children did not survive infancy. With no surviving legitimate heirs, his niece, Princess Victoria, succeeded him, marking the beginning of the Victorian era. William IV's reign is often considered a transitional period in British history, reflecting the evolving dynamics of the monarchy and political reforms.
