Winterbotham (British, 1763 1859), An Historical, Geographical, Commercial, and Philosophical View of the United States. 2nd edition. London: H.D. Symonds, 1799. First published in 1795. ----DESCRIPTION: This is the rare hand-colored tobacco plate from Volume III, opposite page 427. In addition to its British editions, an American Edition was published by John Reid in 1796 in New York. The plant image in the New York edition is identical to the present image, but has a few words under the title. The New York version is reportedly the first colored print shown in a book published in America. Although not stated, the image may have been engraved by William Grainger (British, active 1765 1809, who engraved other plates for the books). ----CONDITION: Image very good. Original hand color.
