From a print by J. Smith after a picture by Kneller. Engraved By W. Holl. Peter the Great, the transformative ruler of Russia from 1682 to 1725, left an indelible mark on the country's history through his ambitious and forceful modernization efforts. Focused on Westernization, Peter initiated sweeping reforms in various aspects of Russian society. His military restructuring, influenced by Western tactics and technologies, resulted in the formation of a formidable standing army and a modernized navy. Peter's Table of Ranks introduced a merit-based system for social and official standing, challenging the traditional hierarchy based on noble birth. Additionally, he secularized the Russian Orthodox Church, establishing the Holy Synod to centralize control over religious affairs. The founding of St. Petersburg as a new, westernized capital symbolized Peter's commitment to aligning Russia with European standards. Despite the autocratic methods employed, Peter the Great's legacy endures as a key figure in Russia's transformation into a more modern and influential state. Approximate Image Size: 5 ins x 4 ins.
