Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, assumed office in 1850 following the sudden death of President Zachary Taylor. A member of the Whig Party, Fillmore had previously served as Vice President and took over the presidency amidst the debates surrounding the expansion of slavery in the newly acquired territories from the Mexican-American War. His administration became synonymous with the Compromise of 1850, a series of legislative measures aimed at addressing the sectional tensions between the North and the South. Fillmore signed the controversial Fugitive Slave Act into law as part of the compromise, further escalating tensions between abolitionists and slaveholders. The California Gold Rush, the Webster-Ashburton Treaty with Britain, and the emergence of the Know-Nothing Party marked significant events during his presidency. Despite his efforts to navigate the tumultuous political landscape, Fillmore faced criticism, and he did not secure his party's nomination for the 1852 election. His legacy remains intertwined with the complex issues of his time, particularly regarding slavery and the national unity debate.Published by Johnson Fry & Co. New York, 1868.
