James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, assumed office in 1845 and served a single term until 1849. A Democrat from Tennessee, Polk is often remembered for his assertive approach to achieving Manifest Destiny, the belief that the United States was destined to expand across the North American continent. During his presidency, he successfully oversaw the annexation of Texas, the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute through the Oregon Treaty, and the acquisition of significant territories from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. Polk's presidency also coincided with the California Gold Rush, a transformative event in American history. His administration faced debates over the expansion of slavery into newly acquired territories, leading to the Wilmot Proviso and the Compromise of 1850. Polk's focused and ambitious Four-Point Plan left a lasting impact on the nation's territorial and economic development, but he chose not to seek re-election and retired from politics after a single term.
