IRELAND Wicklow Powerscourt Mansion 1870s COLOR PRINT " FO Morris antique prints colored engravings circa 1870s ANTIQUE COLOR PRINT Title: POWERSCOURT Approximate Image Size: 5 X 7 1/2 inches Approximate Overall Size: 8 X 10 1/2 inches Brilliant color print. Printed and engraved by by B. Fawcett, Driffield. This beautiful attractive colour plate originates from and is one of a Series of Picturesque Views of Seats of The Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britian and Ireland as presented by F. O. Morris. A greater proportion of the drawings which originated from the publication were by Alexander F. Lydon, and printed from coloured wood-blocks using the Baxter process by Benjamin Fawcett. Published by William Mackenzie, Ludgate Hill, Edinburgh and Dublin CONDITION: Excellent Condition. The colors are brilliant, rich and bright. Reverse side is blank and printed on heavier quality paper. From the old descriptive: POWERSCOURT, NEAR ENNISKERRY, COUNTY OF WICKLOW - VISCOUNT POWERSCOURT. Powerscourt, distant from Bray about four miles, is approached by a handsome arched gateway of granite, and an avenue of beech trees about a mile long, over-looking the valley of the River Dargle, the name of which is a corruption of the Celtic "Dah-glen," the "Valley of the Oaks," from the ancient forest, the remains of which still exist in the deer park. - The house, built of granite about 1730, presents a Grecian facade to the north or entrance front, with a central block and wings, terminated by gateways and obelisks surmounted by eagles. The south front overlooks the terraces and the view across the valley to the "Great Sugar-loaf," called in Irish "The Silver Spear," a conical mountain somewhat resembling Vesuvius in form, one thousand six hundred and fifty feet above the sea, the cone of which is of granite, piercing through the overlying strata of clay-state.
