c1842. Original fine print. Engraved area measures: 11,5 x 15 cm. Antique steel engraving and etching. Engraved by J. Rogers after J.M. Wright. The engraving depicts a scene with verse of a Robert Burns poem. ' Wi bonnet aff, quoth I, Sweet lass, I think ye seem to ken me; I m sure I ve seen that bonie face But yet I canna name ye.' " The engraving by J. Rodgers is a typical example of an 18th. Century scene from one of Burns' poems. This scene shows that the Fair by Burns' time had deteriorated into a curious mixture of solemnity and carnival. " " 'The Holy Fair' was written by Burns in 1785 describing the annual sacrament held by surrounding parishes in Mauchline. This consisted of preaching and prayer meetings lasting several days prior to communion. The engraving shows a young couple in romantic playful mood strolling behind two old ladies in black.
