Exquisite 1850s Steel Engraving - Beautiful Antique Print , Artist: n/a - Engraver: n/a Published by J. & F. Tallis, London Edinburgh & Dublin The town of Harpers Ferry is in Jefferson county, in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, U.S., at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, in the Blue Ridge Mountains where West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland converge. When the town was part of Virginia, it was the site of the Harpers Ferry Raid, one of the major incidents precipitating the American Civil War, and of several battles of the war. A beautiful elaborate celtic like fleur de lis scrollwork decorative border surrounds the image, typical of a John Tallis type production. 3 little vignettes adorn the image, one at the top which depict AN INDIAN STALKING BEHIND A TREE TRUNK WITH A RIFLE; the left bottom vignette depicts POCAHONTAS INTERCEDING FOR THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN SMITH 1606; the bottom right vignette depicts MASSACRE OF THE SETTLERS BY THE INDIANS 1622. Approximate Image Area Size: 3 7/8 X 5 3/4 inches Approximate Size With Decorated Border and vignettes: 6 3/4 X 9 inches Approximate Overall Size with margins: 7 1/8 X 10 1/2 inches CONDITION: Very Good Condition. Image area is clean, clear and sharp with beautiful detail and in Excellent Condition. Blank on Reverse side and printed heavier paper. This beautiful print would look great matted and framed.
